If this has persisted for more than one month, you may have a condition called pica, which basically just means you have a desire to eat non-food items.
Try taking an iron supplement--it sounds weird, but research has shown that pica can be caused by anemia, or iron deficiency.
Please, talk with your doctor about it. He/She can make sure there isn't a serious underlying condition!

I ate paper during my Maths O Level exam in 1986 to stop my stomach rumbling. It didn't work. I didn't pass, either.

"Why am I obsessed with eating paper?!"
"What's wrong with me?"
The technical term is: MAD !
.... Although in saying that when I was younger (about 7 yrs) I used to chew paper (but not swallow it) and it became a rather peculiar habit.

I don't know how true this is, but I've heard there's more goodness in the box the cornflakes are packed in, than the contents.

I don't know, but it's a habit you need to break fast! Our stomachs weren't designed to digest paper.
