tercir2006: Aloe Veera is not a cactus, it is a succulent.
Kat: look it up on the internet is OK, but do not take the last part of kat's advice about appling it without sunscreen then lie in the sun
You can do one or both of the suggestions about identifying whether or not your plant is aloe vera
Take a piece to a florist or garden centre
Look it up on the internet (some sites have full descriptions with pictures of many plants)

Break off the bottom leaf and take it to your local garden center.
For sure, Aloevera is a cactus. If it doesn't look like a cactus then it's not Aloevera.

well...you can take the easy way out and look it up on the internet by comparing it with a picture or (my person preferred way of it) you can lay out with no sunscreen on, get burned, and rub it on your skin to see if it works.
