To lose weight, you have to burn more calories than you eat-that means consuming healthy food and excersising. Avoid refined sugar/high fructose corn syrup, etc. Switch up your excersise routine every couple of weeks so your body doesn't get used to one routine and burn less calories. :)
Once you acheive your goal---'Diets' are not really meant for long-term use, what you may be looking for is a life-style change. :) Continue what you normally have been doing-eating healthy, excersising. Remember to let yourself enjoy a treat now and then, so you don't feel deprived and binge. And don't starve yourself, or your metabolism will slow down and once you start eating, you gain more than you weighed beforehand. Good luck and hope this helps. ;)

Exercise!
If you want to get bigger instead of just toning up you should
- increase your calorie intake for the day lots
- Use a rep range of 6-8 reps with training i.e. very high intensity
- keep cardio to a minimum
- eat plenty of meat and carbohydrates, lots of carbohydrates
- maybe use a weight gainer supplement.
Diet!
You should decide how many calories you want in your diet, and then I would recomend looking for items that are low calorie, but also low fat, but it all depends on what you are doing for your diet. The main thing for a diet to work is just to consume fewer calories than what you are burning, so lower calorie is best. But the thing about just lower calorie is that you don't want to get something that is lower calorie, but still has a ton of fat, and you don't want to get something that is low calorie but with a ton of sugar. Just look at the labels and you need to figure out what fits into YOUR diet.

To successfully lose weight, you must carry out
a plan to balance your caloric intake with exercise.
Ideally, dieting should be done by eating a nutritionally
balanced, low-calorie diet and increasing physical activity.

Eat only healthy foods. No junk food or soda. Drink lots of water. When you get a craving for sweets, eat fruits. It works for me to eat just a lil bit of oatmeal and the craving goes away. Exercise for 30min-1 hour in the morning, and stay active throughout the day Dont drink coffee! And have healthy three meals and try not to snack so much inbetween.
