I hate to insult New York City as it surely has pluses, but I think at least nowadays that it's extremely overrated & overpopulated. It is NOT glamorous. Even the richest parts of manhattan (at least outside), aren't that impressive whatsoever. Glam? Try fake people. That's everywhere. There are many other spots in the U.S. that are better, and it's just polluted, dirty/grimey, and rushy.

Yes there are schools/business headquarters, etc, here, but not ONLY here, elsewhere too.

Why is New York City SO highly sought after, and why do people "aspire," to move to a place that's hell behind a name? You're paying MORE to live in a place where anything can happen (good or horrible). Yes you can make it, but you can also get killed, etc. You can also make it elsewhere.

It also THINKS its the place to be, but it isn't. It's like everyone who's from here THINKS that they're in some utopia, when they're literally walking in manure, and don't even realize it.

It's funny actually! lol

I think it's because of the name, literally, and in many ways. The name, the architecture/skyscrapers, the history, the snootiness, etc. People here tend to think they have an excuse to feel superior.

It's really crap, behind a huge illusion.

Los Angeles & California would carry "glam" better than NYC.

As far as education/business/culture, there's that everywhere, even outside of the US.

Why are people so deluded with this city?

It isn't what it used to be, and it's highly overrated and dirty.

One problem I have with your answers guys is this: You seem to think that living in NYC somehow raises your status quo, makes you special, opens doors for you, and what not. That's kind of deluded. Doors opening perhaps, but a big " i dont think so" on the other parts.

Also, just because YOU live there, how the hell does that associate you with ANY of the business headquarters, or entertainment industry types? Are you a part of all of that? You work in the fashion industry, and are an actor and a model and a singer and a cook and a wall st. lawyer and a magazine editor all at once?

I think you're right in giving them their due credit, but that's them, NOT you. That's deluded. You're not associated with them all JUST because you LIVE there.

That's like saying, I'm an American, I'm fabulous just because this is the country where so many celebrities live.

Deluded.

To user Joe: there is nothing wrong with pondering about my question and coming to my own conclusions, even if I answer my own question! It's called thinking. :-D

Too bad your response was so useless though.

well i grew up in new york my entire life. i dont live in manhattan, i live in brooklyn but i still go to manhattan often. it is crowed but thats how a city is. it is dirty but thats from people that have no respect for those of us that care about the environment and live here. and yes it is polluted. if we could just clear up the streets, encourage people to take the subway instead of driving by lowering the cost and making them cleaner [another thing people dont respect for us that use them EVERYDAY and have to carry around purell and wash our hands 24/7 because some people cant leave there fingers out of their noses and wash their hands] if we could do that then it would be less polluted but i cant help that. some people just love to say im so fabulous because i live in new york city and pay thousands to live there. but i cant help that. some people are just like that and make the world just that much worse.

I like it because it's diverse, different people, ethnicities, lifestyles, etc. All other places in the US I have been too, are leaning more towards one nationality, lifestyle, etc. For ex. Houston, Dallas, LA and others-very Hispanic, same goes for Florida. I love San Francisco, but it seemed to Asian...that's just my opinion, but I could be wrong. It's tough to live there, no doubt, and with a smaller paycheck you would bring more home in other places of the US, but the potential to grow if you make it there it's tremendous. Also, the social life can be great or horrible, depending on what you are looking for. A lot of people are out of town, so you don't find the clicks and childhood originating groups here, so it's easier to meet people. It is not for everyone, and sure not for the ones that are there for the rest of their lives, experience it for a few years, get the experience, then settle down somewhere else... I am not sure why you are sooooo against it. If you call NY fake, then Southern Cali is even worse, I have never seen people more centered around celebrities and brands like in LA...Big cities are big cities regardless of where you are, US, France, Italy, China, Russia etc.

I think that is a load of crap. I live in NYC, and I love this city. Yes it is way to expensive to live, no surprise, but I think it's stupid to say that you can find the stuff you find here ANYWHERE...

If you wanted to experience the beautiful outdoors and trees, no one would say, why go to Maine, you can go ANYWHERE...that isn't true, b/c Maine night have some beautiful outdoor sites that no other place has. NYC is undoubtedly a place to see and be seen. It is ONE of the biggest melting pots in America, if not THE biggest one, and sorry, but for apsiring actors, actresses, singers, song writers, and any other entertain area, it IS a great place to be, b/c NYC is based on just that. If you wanted to make it in the biz you ain't gonna move to Denver...not that Denver isn't a beautiful or great place, but it's just true.

And you can get KILLED?? I think you are just like anyone else who buys into city stereotypes. If you look up statistics, crime in NYC hasd gone DOWN, and has grown in other areas. Just b/c it's a acity doesn't mean we are all worried that we are going to get jumped everyday.

ANd yes it's polluted, every city is. But NYC is the the only or MOST polluted city around. The top 3 cities that are polluted in the US all belong to California. Every city is not alike, and NYC is unique, why would you call it crap?

All cities are unique though, that is why they are what they are, and have the people they have in them. And i'm sorry, but it is a fact that the "businesses" we have are just everyday businesses, b/c NYC is THE financial capital of the United States, and some of the biggest financial and other type of companies have their head quaters in NYC. As well as many fashion Head quaters of course. That is not to brag, it is just a fact that is true. You simply can not find other places that have EXACTLY what NYC has, and again that is not to brag, b/c you also can not find some thing that other cities have in NYC, so that is just how the world works.

And we don't THINK we are in some utopia. EVERYONE that is from ANY somewhat affluent place thinks they are probably better than people from other places, that is LIFE. Yes there are snobs who walk down Park Avenue and think they are all that...uh HELLO...Beverly Hills? Los Angeles? Las Vegas? We are NOT the only ones. The MAJORITY of people, walk around like normal human beings.

I think your comment is pretty much one sided and makes no sense, and I love NYC and wouldn't want to live anywhere else, and there is nothing wrong with saying that, b/c I'm sure people who live in Michigan, or Virgina, or Cali, or Colorado are saying the same things about the places they live.

Lucas: It is with pleasure that I tell you that New York is all that. Having traveled extensively and living elsewhere now. There is no place like it. We keep it real. People are so envious of us because we do have it all. Most places aspire to be like us. We set the example. Conceited no fact yes. I live in Virginia and think it is the pits. Can't wait to retire and move back to NYC. Any food, any entertainment, any enviorment, any nationality it is all here. Southerners soooo booooring. Expensive yes. Worth every dime. Never had a fear for my life until I visited Richmond, Virginia. I feel safer living in New York. Mind your own and most likely you won't be bothered. However with your attitude you don't understand. Most outsiders don't. Sorry you can't be from New York everyone can't be so blessed. I LOVE NEW YORK. LONG ISLAND ROCKS!!!!

It is clear that you either never really lived in NYC or if you did live in NYC, you couldn't afford to go enjoy what an NYC night may offer .... or perhaps you were too lame to leave you apartment. NYC is not about the "Glam" it is about the electricity.

NYC has the culture in the many museus, broadway shows and live entertainment. Great Restaurants which are world renowed. NYC fashion, finance and economical markets move the world in their respctive fields.

yea a lot of nyc has become just a name
but you know, we all have our opinions
so let's just stay to what you believe and so on
i personally love living here as much as you love l.a. or wherever you are from
yes it is hell of a dirty place
yes its not the best
yes it might seem repulsive
yes you can say i live in a pile of manure or whatever
but you know, this just might be the best pile of manure anyone ever stepped on
cause quite a lot of people step on it considerin the number of tourists
so lets end this.

I've spent much of my life traveling; I've been to 36 countries and lived in 17 states. There is no city like NYC. Love it or hate it, there is no place like it on earth and there is no place that I would rather live.

Funny Lucas, you end up answering your own question. You mention that NY isn't the top place of everything. That there are places that have better (eg, LA glam).

But what you didn't notice in your tiraid is that NY HAS EVERYTHING.

I agree with you 100%. Yet I was born and raised here so there's nothing I could really do about it, unless I want to leave and suddenly I'm surrounded by strangers who call me friend.
