The answer is no unless the felony was expunged. If it wasn't, the answer is: No Guns & no voting if serving time. (BTW- If someone has a listed felony conviction and they are caught using, having in their possesion, or owning a firarm, its a FEDERAL crime and it'll usually be a Federal pen. they will see the inside of, not a State pen. OUCH!)

Under US Federal law, anyone convicted of a felony can NEVER own a gun. Voting is controlled by state law. Most states allow convicted felons to regain voting rights after a period of time. Check with the individual states for specific rules.

The only way to regain the right to vote or own a firearm is to get a pardon by the govenor or president. And yes they do it all the time, I think 70 of the 200+ Clinton Pardoned were people who had already served time and just wanted the right to vote.

Your friend needs to check with both state and federal laws. For good reason, I'm inclined to say "no",especially to the buying a gun part. Sounds as though the charges were not taken seriously, and that rings a warning bell to me.

. You will be able to vote at any time once you register. For that you are only required to be a citizen and have a legal residence. You will not be able to buy a gun in most states. You need to have your record expunged legally for that.
