One thing I cannot understand is some of the religious people who somehow think that merely quoting a passage in the Bible is going to somehow convent non believers.

If someone does not believe the Bible, how is a passage from the Bible going to have any influence?

Anytime I see someone merely copy a passage I am completely uninterested, yet it happens time and time again as though somehow I eventually am going to be beaten down and just accept that because its contineully put in front of me that it must be true.

I am open minded enough to listen to those who are willing to speak from their hearts about their beliefs, but for the lazy few who merely spout passages, gimme a break. Am I alone here???

Well...as the bible syaeth in Luke 1294 verse 78...." annoy all thee who cross thy path as much as possible until they cant thinketh straight and beat thine horse dead. Then thou shalt be liketh a chattering parrot that yearns not for the cracker, but shall buildeth a condo in heaven" I hope this answers your question.

I see your point exactly. How can one use the Bible with someone who rejects the Bible? I imagine it depends on the question. What I mean is this: perhaps the question revolves around the age of the earth. The person believes in evolution and rejects the belief of creation. Perhaps the person mentions something about how ridiculous it is to believe in a religion or in a book that teaches the earth is only 6,000 years old when science shows that the earth must be much older than that. It helps to show that one that the Bible passage involved (Genesis 1: 1, 2) does not teach that the earth is 6,000 years old.

People oftentimes reject religion because it is (supposedly) based on the Bible. But many times, beliefs are based on man-made traditions rather than scripture. So some are operating under the assumption that the Bible says something that in fact it does not say. Therefore if they are shown that the Bible does not say a thing, they are sometimes more open to consideration of the Bible.

That's true. Unfortunately, most christians have no other foundation they can draw on. Whereas a modern man can draw on literature, science, philosophy, the arts or their personal experience, traditionalists have only a dubious text to rely on. It's sad, really.

Just as bad is when non-christians start using christian texts to find the internal contradictions in the religion. These people have shut off their critical reasoning, so such arguments are a waste of breath.

The worst are "satanists". Picking a few comical verses from the bible and building a religion around a 5000 or 2000 year old boogeyman is ludicrious.

Not trying to anger Christians here, this is just from my experiences.
I know that when they are trying to convert you, they quote scriptures because somewhere in the bible is says that the way to believing, is hearing "the word" But these people just don't understand that the more of "the word" we hear, the more questions it brings up of how people can actually believe the story.

You make a good point. I frequently use verses from the Bible in answers to questions to support my answer and opinion. Why? I think the truths of those scriptures can be plainly seen, even for someone who does not believe. I take time to make sure of the accuracy of what I am sharing, and pass the sources on to those who are interested. To simply dismiss reading an answer because of a verse in it is to miss out on the purpose of this place.... to learn and understand. Those answers are "spoken from their hearts". To those who dislike it... that is your choice... and loss.

If I told you what I believe to be true and gave no confirmation from where I got it would you be that blind and dumb to believe me only because I said it be so?

Does the news channels always report on their feelings and make stuff up with out giving you were the story or event took place?

We give scripture to support what we believe and why we believe it!

It is true not everybody likes it, but neither did the pharisees and saudicees in Jesus Christ day when Jesus Christ would tell them "It Is Written" or to those who did not believe He would say "have you not read!"

I think its lazy when you ask a simple question and don't wan't to go look for yourself to see if it is true!

What we do is no different from what Jesus Christ did! Besides its not just for you, selfish one! There are others reading these posts!

I hope you enjoy these scriptures!

Romans 10:11 For the Scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

2 Timothy 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. 14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

ROFL.
You will not accept the Bible but alas you will cherish my opinion? The opinion of an ex suicidal drug addict and alcoholic who dropped out of high school to be a rock and roll star. That's just silly. Any wisdom or knowledge I posses comes from the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The Bible is the "owners manual" for our relationship with GOD through Jesus Christ.

Whether you believe it or not, the Bible is the first source of truth available to man. I agree that if someone doesn't believe it, it's foolish to just quote a passage and go on about your business, but if I quote a passage, and then explain the truth of it to you, I've shown that there is truth to be gotten from it, and perhaps you'll be more open to further truth that comes from it.

You are not alone! When I see a passage I just skip over the post. If you can't put it in your own words then to me that means you do not know it enough to believe it.
