Open Office is free. It has everything you will need. You will be able to open all of your old files, also save as word documents. I was sceptical about this at first but it is sponsored by Sun Microsystems (the Java people) so I thought I'd give it a try. The suite of programmes includes a pretty good spreadsheet and presentation software.
I bet they would have liked to have called it "I can't believe it's not M******ft office" but copyright rules prevail and all that....

No. The only way to do it is to use a program called 'ghost' and make an image of the entire contents of the old harddrive and put that image on the new harddrive.
Just get another copy of works for less than $10.

Unfortunately you can't. If you are only after a basic word processor, then AbiWord is a much smaller download than OpenOffice; free here

no longer supported but still available: Atlantis Nova (free)

No, programs must be loaded from the original disks.
You can download a full featured word processor for "Open Office". http://www.openoffice.org
BTW, this is a free, open source program.
