First you will need to run a good, updated anti virus program. And then I'd run some sypware removal tools. After the virus has been removed, restart and see if there has been any damage done. If so, you can probably fix it via the Windows Repair Console.
Read the following.
Put your XP disk into your CD drive and restart your system. This will start the XP installation process. When you come to the screen that asks if you want to install XP or if you would like to “Repair” XP, choose Repair. This will open the repair console command prompt. At the prompt, type: chkdsk /r. (There is a space between the k and the /. Now hit “Enter”. The repair should now start. Allow it to run until it stops. This can take some time, so be patient.
If all goes well, XP will replace any and all missing operating system files.

Windows XP Repair Installation
At some point you may need to repair the installation of
Windows XP. This is preferable to a clean install in many
cases since it attempts to only repair your copy of Windows
without having to delete all the files on your computer
first. In many cases a repair installation is enough to
fix the problem. A repair install deletes the files normally
installed by windows XP and then reinstalls them off the disc. A
repair install will not rebuild your computer's registry,
delete applications and user settings, or fix problems
caused being caused by a program.
1. First you have to boot the computer with the Windows
XP cd in the cd tray. You will see a black screen and
it will ask you to press any key to boot from the cd so
press the spacebar and your computer will boot from the CD.
2. After a moment you will be taken to the Windows XP Setup
screen. Though the second option says to repair do not
press R. Instead press enter to select the setup for
Windows XP.
3. Next, you have to accept the license agreement from Windows.
Once you've done that it will search for your existing
installation of Windows.
4. Once it has finished detecting the installation you need
to select the XP installation you want to repair. You can
repair the installation by pressing R. If you don't see
the repair option you will need to do a clean installation.
Your version of windows may have been damaged in a way that
it cannot carry out a repair.
5. Setup will then copy the files it needs to the hard drive
and reboot the computer. A message will come up asking you
if you want to boot from the cd, don't press any keys and
just let the timer run out. The set up will continue and
look like is doing a clean install but all of your applications
and settings will be intact when it finished.
An important note is to not activate your windows over the
internet right away. Always enable the XP firewall to protect
yourself.

Restoring the Computer to an Earlier Operating State
NOTICE: Before you restore the computer to an earlier operating state, save and close any open files and exit any
open programs. Do not alter, open, or delete any files or programs until the system restoration is complete.
1 Click the Start button, point to All Programsâï Accessoriesâï System Tools, and then click System
Restore.
2 Ensure that Restore my computer to an earlier time is selected and click Next.
3 Click a calendar date to which you want to restore your computer.
The Select a Restore Point screen provides a calendar that allows you to see and select restore points.
All calendar dates with available restore points appear in boldface type.
4 Select a restore point and click Next.
If a calendar date has only one restore point, then that restore point is automatically selected. If two or
more restore points are available, click the restore point that you prefer.
5 Click Next.
The Restoration Complete screen appears after System Restore finishes collecting data and then the
computer restarts.
6 After the computer restarts, click OK.
To change the restore point, you can either repeat the steps using a different restore point, or you can
undo the restoration.

If you can do a system restore do it. (Start/search/all files then type in system restore) click search and the file should pop up momentarily. Once the file appears double click it and follow the insructions. Go back to a bolded date on the calender before the virus happened. (before you gave it to your friend) follow the intructions, let your computer reboot and hopefully everything will be alright. If not download avg free spyware and virus programs at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 They're very user friendly and easy to download.....Good luck

Assuming that you are using Microsoft, click on start in the lower left hand corner. Click on "all programs" then click on "pc help & tools" on that list you'll find "system restore". Click on that and follow the prompts. You may also want to go to superantispyware.com and download their virus scan program. It will find any bugs and delete them from your computer. It is a free download.
