Is anyone ever completely free of that? I doubt I will be, whether its approval from parents, friends, siblings, co-workers or even myself. I mean, if you don't want anyone to approve of you or something you did/are doing, wouldn't you be a bit lazy and not care about anything? Even if it's just your own approval you need, you still aren't free of the need...

Most of us are never really free from the need of approval, whether it be our parents, spouse, boss, etc. I still like getting approval myself.

ace:
Being a human and a Christian in the process of transformation of the mindset (conversion), I know that seeking the approbation ("approval") of others is an outstanding trait of all humans. Seeking this approbation in the "religious" realm can prove to be very toxic, spiritually, for any Christian since the thrust shifts from "saved" by God's GRACE to performance-based religion [called "legalism"] to score "Brownie" points (seek acceptance & approbation) with God and humans that are regarded as signifigant to us.
The shift therefore, deviates from FAITH, GRACE & JESUS CHRIST towards seeking approbation of God & people to "be saved" ! This is very toxic since one "called" of God, is saved by GRACE - not contingent upon "good works" via the approbation & acceptance of others.
Seeking the approbation of God through "being good" on humanistic works, is not Chritianity but a corruption of Grace, called "religion". We are human beings - not human doings, that is why the need for approbation of God - ( minus the human effort to seek out His [God's] favour) is paramount to the Christian journey founded in a spiritual relationship with Jesus Christ. Humans are created to have a spiritual relationship with his or her Creator - based, solely on God's love demonstrated to us freely, by GRACE (no seeking this by human "good works" approbation). Human beings in general, seek out the approbation of other humans - called peer group pressure.
