You wont go in as a brunette and come out beach blonde. That would fry your hair, and it would look like a horrible job, and if its not done right you will have super yellow or even orange hair.

Trust me, you can get horrible color jobs at a salon just as easily as from a box. Box colors are exactly the same things used in salons, except salons measure and mix theirs by hand.

They would lighten it gradually. It can be done. I would go talk with a professional colorist, a good salon will have a person on board who only does color. Thats the salon you want if you're that concerned about the outcome.

Also, remember, you dont pay for something you dont like. Its salon rules.

It's generally not the bleach that is so bad for your hair, it's the level of peroxide the stylist uses to activate the bleach that kills your hair. Developer (peroxide) comes in 4 levels, 10 volume, 20 volume, 30 volume, and 40 volume. A LOT of under educated stylists are taught in beauty school that 40 volume and bleach is perfectly fine to use to highlight hair (it develops much faster). The slower your hair takes to lighten, however, the less the damage. I would never let a stylist use anything higher than 20 volume on me (though I prefer 10) and never go under the dryer. It's your choice whether you do or not (the heat speeds up the process, and faster means more damage). You can achieve the same level of blonde with a lower volume developer that you can with the highest, it just takes a lot longer. As long as you are an educated consumer, it should perfectly fine for you to have your hair highlighted. Also, if your hair has never been colored before, they can use a high-lift color, which is 40volume developer with permanent color to lighten. It tends to lift warmer, but doesn't use bleach to remove the pigment. This is the only instance where 40 volume is a good idea. I hope that helps some!

No, it isn't bad. However, if you eventually want to go back to a darker shade it will take longer. After bleaching, hair does not take color well.
I'm originally a brunette and I've bleached my hair for years. This last time I was at the salon I decided it was time for a change and wanted to build in some darker brown highlights. However, I was told that it is difficult to get color to stick to bleached hair. So, we went a darker shade of blonde this time and I will be able to go darker next time since there was some color added to my hair. It is a process to bring your hair color back once you decide to.

Go professional when it comes to bleaching and know when your hair's had enough. Maybe just for a summer for a big summer bang. Remember the darker the hair the longer the process and after a while the damage is not worth it.

Bleaching hair is not too bad. The only thing I don't like about bleaching is getting the touch ups, which is rather expensive.

Why not try for color extensions instead. I have pink in mine.

In the past 3 months i have gone from brunette to white blonde. what i did is have it streaked every 3 weeks. every time it goes lighter and lighter without doing a all over colour that looks awful if it goes wrong. i bought the home bleaching kits and like i said just streaked it and streaked it. when it got to quite light i then did a all over blonde. untill then it will just like you are having nice subtle streaks put through ur hair. tip; at some point it will start looking abit brassy, buy lots of purple coloured shampoo/conditioner and lots of "blonde" shampoo/conditioner and also by the lightest blonde sachet toner, their about 99p! and they work wonders on toning down ur hair.

I'm a dishwater blonde that has had light blonde highlights for 17 years. My hair used to be very long, it is now still growing back out after I went to a new stylist 3 years ago and she left the highlighting formula way too long in my hair

bleaching your hair is best left to the pros. Its time development is specific to the darkness of your hair. It is bad for any hair color, from the lightest of blondes to those with black hair. It strips color from your hair and lets your hair absord damaging chemicals. Going to a salon can assure that they wont damage your hair enough to break off. They will only bleach it as intensly as will still leave your hair in decent condition.

If it's done properly then there are very few dangers, just the usual alergy things.

People have bad hair colours because they do it at home - get carried away - and don't read the instructions.

Bleaching your hair any color is bad for your hair. It burns your hair, and it's very hard to repair it. I would suggest just getting highlights.
