My fiance' is in Parris Island and has been since May 14th. He found out his grandmother [his legal guardian before he turned 19] has a rare form of lung cancer shortly after arriving, and his grandfather [also his guardian.. they are considered legally his parents] now is having to have heart surgery to have a pacemaker put in and no one will be able to care for his grandmother in case anything happens to his grandfather. His grandfather informed me about the Hardship discharge and I've sent him the details on it. I'm pretty positive he'll recieve this due to the circumstances, but does anyone know about how long this takes to process once he informs his SDI?

yes his senior..
and yes there are; however the grandparents are in GA. His mother is in KY and has no vehicle; his aunt in in AL with only a company vehicle [she works for animal control in NW Alabama]; and his uncle already has a mentally challenged son and has to care for him daily.
My fiance is also executor of the will's, I figured that would help his chances..

A hardship discharge is NOT a 'for certain'. Once an individual makes the commitment to join the military, EVERYTHING is done at the convenience of the government.

Make sure that he applies ASAP. He must include a letter from the doctor stating clearly a diagnosis, prognosis, and if the illness is terminal the length of time remaining of both parents. That letter should be written in the most dire manner possible. As well, documents showings proof of guardianship.

Good luck with everything. I hope all works out.

Once all documents are submitted it can take as little as 1 week to complete.

Sorry I don't know too much on this. Once they get the paperwork, and it's decided that he should get the HD, it shouldn't take more than a couple weeks. They may not give him a full discharge though, they may give him leave and then allow him to come back to boot camp. Feel free to e-mail me and I can contact my KV at Lejeune and see if we can get more info for you.

well,if he doesn't request it it won't happen. if the military deems ANY of the other relatives to be capable(not willing, just capable) they can and will deny or delay it.

In other words, don;t count on it being a sure thing, and don't count on it happening within a matter of days.
