I purchased two kittens aged 9 weeks 2 days ago and they seem to be developing cat flu. They were very lively and playful even though their eyes were watery and they were a bit sneezy. They are eating and drinking well but today I took them to the vet and she said as long as they eat and drink plenty they will overcome it on their own. They were wormed and given Frontline. Now they seem very lethargic and sleepy. Could they have licked the frontline off each other? Will that make them ill? What can I do ?

Frontline does make them a bit drowsy, i am sure they will perk up if they are up to date with their vaccines I am sure they will get better, check their food and drink intake and if you're still worried take them back to the vets.

I hope they get well soon! x

Hi hun,

My kitten was also sneezing and had a little discharge from the eyes and nose when we first got him - we saw the vet who gave us the same advice as your vet gave to you, and after a couple of weeks he was absolutely fine. Kittens can usually handle illnesses just as humans can - our bodies fight them off for us.

My new kitten had frontline a few days ago and she was very sleepy for a day. Even a trip to the vet with no injections can make the kittens tired for a day, as it can be quite stressful for them! Kittens also sleep more than adult cats - up to 20 hours a day!

Licking the Frontline off each other won't have made them ill. We asked our vet about it because we have a 1 year old male cat who licked the Frontline off our new kitten; but he said that it was designed to be safe to lick off.

Give them a few days and monitor how much they eat and drink. I think they will be just fine honey! You sound like you're looking after them really well.

xx Emmie

Frontline can make a cat drowsy and kittens do sleep a lot during their first few weeks of life, the best thing to do is keep an eye on them, if they still seem drowsy and ill in the morning take them back to the vets and see what they say as you can never be too careful with kittens with cat flu.

Hope this helps.

Keep checking that they are eating and drinking plenty of fluids. If they are still lethargic by Monday. Take them back to the vets. It is possible that they have licked the front line off each other but it shouldn't poison them. If they start showing signs of froth around the mouth then you should get them checked out a.s.a.p.

Kittens are like babies and need constant care for the first few weeks. Keep them warm and make sure they have enough fluids and they'll be fine.

Good luck with the kittens.

frontline, worming vaccines, frightening experience plus the symptoms of an upper respiratory infection has taken their toll on these little ones. keep them warm and give them some lactol wrist warm it does help. if they are still not well 2morrow then you need to speak to a vet. they need plenty of fluid and some food because at that age they need to have glucose because they will become rapidly very ill without it this is the reason i am suggesting lactol it is given to hand raised kittens and recuperating cats because it is easy to digest and has everything they need. the infections in the respiratiory tract is common and will reoccur in kittens/cats when they are stressed. hope this info helps

Tiny kittens sleep a lot regardless. Keep them warm and comfortable and make sure they eat and drink well.

Give them a couple of days and if the sneezing and watery eyes worsens then call your vet. Otherwise they will probably be fine.

Frontline should not make them sick.

Good luck to you and your dear little babies.

Were they given their shots as well? Sometimes a frightening experience can make young animals tired. If the vet says they'll overcome it on their own they should be fine. Give them a day and if they seem to be doing worse, call the vet and see what she recommends. For now, just let them sleep it off.

I would call the vet and ask about the front line, that could be a possibility. Kittens loose energy really quick and love to snuggle and sleep. One moment they can all over the place and in the next moment passed out on your lap purring. Enjoy it, that's my favorite time with cats!!!!!!!

55g/2oz fresh coriander leaves (washed and chopped)
juice of half lemon
4 cloves garlic (crushed)
4 green chillies (de-seeded and chopped)
½ tsp coriander powder
1 tsp cumin powder
½ tsp black peppercorns (crushed)
½ tsp turmeric powder
½ tsp garam masala
2 tsp grated ginger
1 tsp salt

Method

1. Put two tsp of lemon juice in the minced kitten meat and leave aside to tenderise the meat.
2. Blend the oil, garlic, ginger, chillies, crushed peppercorns, cumin, coriander powder, lemon juice, turmeric powder and salt.
3. Fold the blended paste into the kitten meat and add the chopped fresh coriander leaves.
4. With wet hands skewer the meat into long sausage shapes. Rotate the meat around the skewer, pressing gently all round.
