Basically you'll want a machine with a Core 2 Duo processor, lots of RAM (at *least* 2gb and preferably 4gb) and a large, fast hard drive. A DVD burner, obviously.

You'll also need a good external hard drive for backup.

You'll also want to invest in a VERY good monitor. It's not a gaming rig, so you don't need a $300 video card designed to pump out high framerates in 3D games, photo editing is about still images... You'll be fine with something basic like a Geforce 7300GT or Radeon X1300.

Paint Shop Pro 9 and Photoshop elements have 90% of the features of Photoshop at a fraction of the cost, but for professional use you probably need full blown Photoshop CS2 or CS3- clients may bring you files in Photoshop format or require it, etc.

When I first got in to photo-editing it was the days when computers ran at 12 mhz. It took as long as 30 seconds to make a change. I had to upgrade my computer just to use Photoshop. These days, though, just your common ordinary computer is more than fast enough. Macintoshes used to be traditional for any kind of graphic work but I'd recommend a PC, since they're a lot cheaper, and these days just as good.

It would be nice to have a big screen, I'd say 19" at least, since they're so cheap these days. You don't need a special graphics card, whatever graphic hardware comes with the computer these days will be more than adequate. And if you want to hold a lot of pictures, a big disk drive (but your basic computer today comes with 20 gigs which you might never use up!)

The best software is Photoshop, definitely. It's kind of expensive, but there's nothing else as good.

Depends on how much you want to spend at apple.com. You can get a Mac Pro Tower with a nice large high resolution monitor and spend $3000+. Or get an iMac with a 24 inch screen built in for 1/2 that. Just get as much ram and storage as you can afford. You can get multiple drives with the Mac Pro and I think up to 3 tetrabytes of storage. Add a full version of Photoshop and you are set.
