The black and tan coloration is distinctive of several breeds. Do you have details besides the color? Here are the breeds with black and tan: Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, Miniature Pinscher, Manchester Terrier, German Shepherd, Brussels Griffon, Afghan Hound, Airedale Terrier, German Pinscher, Welsh Terrier, Black and Tan Coonhound, Gordon Setter. And rare breeds (meaning it's not too likely you're dog is one): Beauceron, Hovawart, English Shepherd, Patterdale Terrier... there are a few more, but that's a start.
Is there any white in him? If so, he's a tri. The following breeds come in tri: Collie, Australian Shepherd, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Basenji, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, English Toy Spaniel, the four varieties of Swiss mountain dog (Bernese most common)... there may be a few more, but since you didn't say it had white, I gave up on those.

I couldn't give you an honest answer without a picture... sorry. Try going to akc.org and go to breeds look at the breed pictures there. If he is a bigger dog I would look at rottwielers or dobermans. But if he's a small dog he could be a minpin, chihuahua, or maybe a type of spaniel. If he has a long back to he might be a dachshund or mini dachshund. If you can send me a pic at animalmatix@yahoo.com I would be able to tell you for sure. Good Luck.

Could be Rottweiler(big, heavy set dog, wide mouth, jowly, short tail), Doberman pinscher(tall, very sleek, pointy snout, pointy ears if docked and traditionally docked tail), or for smaller dogs, Chihuahuas can have that coloring, Minnie pinschers can have that coloring(look kinda like a chihuahua only bigger), Dachshunds(very short legs, long body and long ears) , Gordon setter(Big dog, longish hair, has some jowls), Lancashire Heeler(smallish dog, short legs, upright ears)
Hope this helped!

Try posting a picture of the dog on photobucket or snapfish and including a link to that. Unfortunately a coat color description doesn't really give too much to go on.

Your Puppy might be a Caviliar King Charles dog (see first picture), a Rotweiller (see second picture), a beagle (see third picture). Here are the pictures to match up your dog:

I hope that this answers your question! Thanks, and good luck on your new puppy!

Could be a rottweiler, a doberman, or any variety of terrier. My little rat terrier has markings similar to those.

If its real small....miniature pinscher.
Large and skinny....doberman.
short, fluffy......mutt
the color you described is called a "Black and Tan"
I have a black and tan cocker spaniel.
Unless you post a picture....it would probably be too hard to just guess.
