I have a cat that has very fine hair. It grows patches that form solid masses on its back. I have to take a shears and clip the solid masses off. The matted hair is almost like a sponge made of hair wheh clipped off. They are about 2 inches in lengthe and 1 1/2 inches in diameter. How can I prevent this from happening?

Your cat needs to be groomed. Just like you, it needs to have it's hair (fur) combed or brushed to keep the hair (fur) from matting. Fine haired cats mat very easily. I suggest combing or brushing it's fur every day if possible, if not, than once or twice a week will keep the hair from matting. Go to the pet store and get a rubber brush and a metal comb for cats , ask the sales clerk which is best for cat grooming. I hope this helps with your problem. I'm telling you from experience...keep the cat groomed and the mats will go away.

I haven't found brushes to be useful in taking care of mats - they just go over the top and don't get down to the root of the mat. I have a comb I bought that has swivel teeth and that works much better in getting the mats out and the cats don't object to the pulling as much. Start at the outer edge of the mat and free the hair, then move down to the next level.

Don't ever use anything except medical bandage scissors if you are going to cut. Cats have very thin skin - it can tear like tissue paper. If you can't get the "root" of the mat out a professional clipping would be the way to go.

Just as an observation I have one cat that would get mats toward his rear and he would not let me comb them out. They would be clipped at the vet office when he went in for something else.

Because of medical issues that cat was taken off all dry food and converted to meat over a year ago. He has not had a mat since.

I have a cat that has the same type of hair...it's a bit of a pain but you need to brush and comb daily if you don't want mats. I use a rubber curry type brush called a Zoom Groom to remove the loose hair and then go over the areas that mat with a metal grooming comb.

Sounds like you've got a high maintenence kitty. Those masses are called mats, and they can be rather painful for the cat (imagine a spot where your hair was being constantly pulled).

The best prevention is with regular grooming - brush, brush, brush!

Brush and comb your cat daily. Get a shed ender comb. And just cut the mats when they occur. They can be very painful for the cat.

Make sure you brush it AT LEAST once a week. Preferably more than that. Its just like human hair. If you don't take care of it and brush it, it will get knotty and and tangled and matted.
