a light brown color would look amazing. I makes the room seem bigger and calm.

There are some beautiful shades of orange/taupe which would compliment everything you have described. It would warm the room and the orange hue to the taupe is in keeping with the old rule of thumb that a kitchen should be painted a colour of a food. It would also be close to the golden hay colour but darken the room just a bit more. I used it and it was great.

If you really want to darken the room, consider an eggplant or reddish violet. You may not want every wall that dark, but done properly, these deep jewel tones look contemporary and stylish. Purple and yellow are complementary colors, which means they accent one another nicely. But rather than use a full-strength, crayon-purple color, look for tones that are subtler and plan to do many coats of paint to get the rich, even results you desire. Then think of accents in that "golden hay" color, with "pops" of white and black.

I like the sage suggestion. The golden hay would wash out against the honey colored cabinets. The sage would add needed contrast and depth. You could even go a deeper olive or taupe green.

Try
1] caramel [ medium tan with a yellow tinge ]
2] pale gold [ light honey ]
3] also consider medium peach, light lime, or sage green depending on floor color.

I watch HGTV often and the first color that came to mind was a deep red. Now wait. . . hear me out. . . I know you said you didn't want anything "extravegent", and I don't care for the color red either. . . . but a deep red, almost maroon. The gold will actually lighten the room.
You need some rich color in your life, my friend.

You should go with brown or an olive green. Both colors are awesome for a gorgeous kitchen.

just remember that the color you choose will ALWAYS be darker than it looks on the sample! I learned that as a painful lesson after using what I thought to be a "pale" shade of pink on my kitchen walls!!! HORROR!!! needless to say, they are all now off white. Good Luck, and don't go too yellow!

too much yellowish colors would make me sick...i would suggest to go with something completely different then the cabniets & countertops but still in the same color family. something bright! NOT green or yellow!
i would say matbe a tangerine or pumpkin color
