why do Bible-fundies call the Catholic Church that? can anyone explain it to me?

what makes these fundies think that way? their ridiculous interpretations of what's written in the Bible seems to have no end.

First I'll tell you why others call it the "Harlot of Babylon" and then why I don't. The reference is from Revelation 17. Verse 3 says that John saw a woman, sitting on a scarlet beast that had seven heads and ten horns, written all over with blasphemies against God. This is explained in this way. "The seven heads of the beast represent the seven hills of the city where this woman rules. THey also represent seven kings...Verse 18 says, "And this woman you saw in your vision represents the great city that rules over the kings of the earth."
(This is why I don't accept the theory that Revelation is written in code -- the "code" is clarified in the text: the beast REPRESENTS, the woman REPRESENTS...That's self-explanatory).
Now, that's not the whole story, but it helped to see those passages. What some have done is to say that the "great city that rules over the kings of the earth" was Rome at the time of John, so he would understand it in that way, and that Rome is known as the "city of seven hills" and this said that in part that the seven heads are the seven mountains.
The other reason they say the woman is the Catholic church is that the woman represents the umbrella of false religion under the leadership of one individual -- and the Catholic church has declared that all roads lead to God, though the Bible says that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, and no one can come to God except through Jesus. A leader over world-wide false religion would HAVE to accept all religions.
OK, that's them, now for myself, who DOES take the Bible just as literally as they do. First, I DO believe the woman is false religion. She is called Mystery, Babylon the Great, and Babylon is where false religion began.
BUT, nobody knows who the false prophet would be. The text DOES say that it is the city of seven hills, but it also says seven KINGS -- and that does not fit Rome right now -- and doesn't fit the Vatican either. The woman represents the great city that rules over the kings of the earth. That city at present is not Rome. It will be where the beast (Antichrist) resides, and nobody knows now where that will be.
The false prophet is one person -- not a whole denomination, of any kind, and the one world religion is made up of all of the other religions. So, I don't believe the scarlet woman is the "Catholic Church.

They think too small. Babylon was renowned for false religion. Women usually symbolize organizations. Think world wide as these chapters do in Revelations.
A world wide organization of all false religions, not just RCC. All religions claiming to be Christian or not which do not follow God's Word, the Bible, as to what to believe and practice are included.
They are drunk with the blood of the prophets. How many people, both faithful and not, have been killed by religion? What do they do with their power as drunk as they are? They try to steer the wild beast of political powers in the direction they want it to go. How many political gatherings have you seen with clergy right in the middle of it? They would gladly take any money offered them, but power of influence is what they are after.
The Bible predicts soon those same political powers will have had enough and turn on the Great Harlot and completely devastate and kill her. God will put it in their minds to do this.
That is why the cry is made, "Get out of her you people if you do not want to share with her in her sins." Today the effort is being made for people to come out of false religion to the true Christians. Following the Bible message is the only way to real freedom.
