Fear to go against the good of others

Fear to go against the good of things

Fear to go against the truth

Fear to go against righteousness of others..

for all the above are the spirit attributes of the most high God

and fear not to stand against those who do evil to others and things...

For not to stand against, is to not confess Christ before men..

If not the above what does it mean to fear God

If you do not fear God please do not submit, for God will judge you, on His own time.

To fear god is to fear the boogey man?

Are you afraid of your mother? Why do you people have to make god so creepy?

If he is your ultimate parent then he loves you no matter what, he is not here to give you the willys

From what I have seen in scripture the most sure answer to your question is to think of the term fear as another way of saying respect. Now their is to some degree a fear of God just by the nature of who He is. The most true way to look at it though is as respect. Think of it this way we should fear/respect God in the way that a child does their father, in a healthy way. Above all else God loves us. Everything I've said so far is in relation to those who have been saved by Jesus ie Christians. As to the lost ie non-Christians God loves them as well it's just that though He is their Creator He is not their Father because they have not chosen to embrace Jesus. So a non-Christian should fear God in the way that we fear a judge because that is the way they are related to God as Creator and Judge. The wonderful thing is that even this can change if any individual is willing to repent and embrace / follow Jesus. God's love and His willingness to have a personal relationship with us is the defining characteristic of God and Christianity. It is what separates Christianity from other religious views. It is unfortunate that very seldom do we see the love of Jesus in Christians even when they talk about God.

John
you take a very simple premise
and go stir crazy with it !! The base of this thing is -- fear not mankind who can destroy your physical existence -- but, fear God who can destroy your eternal soul !!!

And, this final statement you make here -- of God judging
Is that not the case on absolutely every level anyway ??

Stop agonizing over the "letter" of the law, John
Simply put your trust and faith in the One that brings you your salvation, and, "seek ye first the Kingdom of God"
and, all this other stuff will simply take care of themselves !!!!!

Why should we fear God? Isn't he supposed to be a loving Father to all his children? I think the church wants us to fear God so we will pay them more for salvation, when salvation is free.

The fear of God is fear of displeasing Him.

Just as with any earthly father with kids, kids never want to disappoint him. They want him to take pride in their efforts. It is true for our heavenly Father as well.

We want to bring honor to His name. While I doubt we would ever have God say, "That's my kid!", we would like Him to be in that position.

All of your fears are not from God. God wants us to be peaceful, loving, wise, knowledgable, understanding.....etc...

Read the Bible if you doubt me. God wants you to be set free, if you let Him.

It's not supposed to be fear, it's supposed to be revere. It's a bad translation. But that sounds like someone was dropping acid when they wrote it, too...
