In order to determine the correct answer to your question it would be necessary to know what the potential earnings are. If it is likely that he will make more than $5,350 he should claim 0. If he is sure that he wil make less than $5,350, exempt will be fine.

When my son started working, he put down 0 for his allowances on his W4. I still claimed him as a dependent too on my tax return. My son only had a part-time job and ended up getting whatever he paid in taxes during the year ALL BACK when he did his tax return (1040EZ). If your son wants a little more now on his paycheck and not as much taken out, he can claim 1 allowance instead of 0. My kids have never claimed exempt but have always gotten back a small refund (usually under $100) when they filed a return.

It depends on how much he's going to make for the year. If he will make under around $5200 for the year, he can put down "EXEMPT" on his W-4. If he's making more than that, he should put down single/zero.

He will still be a dependant on your taxes. For him, he will still have to file taxes if he makes over $6,400 at his new job. Even if he doesn't make that much, he might want to file in order to get back some of the taxes that were taken out since he will be taxed at a lower rate being a dependant.
