Fiance wants to feed him adult, but everyone on here seems to say we should keep him on puppy chow. I just want to make sure he'll be ok. He's a large breed, but a mix. He is 44 lbs right now and should grow the size of a lab

It's a bit early to change his food over to adult formula just yet. It is recommended for Large breed dogs to be switched at 9 months of age.
Tell your fiance that it is just too soon yet.

Depending on the blend you might end up with a puppy that really has to gorge itself to eat enough. Whatever the case, I use Taste of the Wild, it's high enough protein and fat it can be fed to adults and pups. However, look at the amounts my dogs get... Thyme-- 10lb, 4 year old shih tzu -- 1/2 cup a day Cashew--9lb 8 mo. old shih tzu - 1 cup a day. Yes, the puppy is eating twice as much as the adult dog. When he is about a year old, he will probably eat around 2/3 a cup, and then we'll figure out what he should be getting (I feed my dogs more when they get thin, and less when they get tubby, lol)

Nothing will happen, but I think it's best to stay on the puppy food for a little bit longer. Wait a few more months. The puppy food has a lot of important nutrients in it. These nutrients are very important for a growing puppy.

Good luck!

the reason that they have adult food vs. puppy food is to keep your dogs happy and healthy, and safe. the adult food might have to much in it for your puppy to handle. you might get away with it without too many problems, but it would not be the best thing that you could do for your dog. i say stick with puppy chow for at least another year and a half, maybe two years. Then switch.

The reason why they have puppy food, adult and senior food is because those food have necessary ingredients/nutrition for what they need. It'll be like feeding a new born adult food...do you think the new born will have the nutrient he/she needs to grow? Use his common sense!

It shouldn't be a problem but I would strongly recommend puppy chow there are certain nutrients puppies need growing up and thats in the puppy chow and for older dogs there are certain nutrients they need to keep them healthy as they get older that puppies don't need. It won't hurt them but probably not easy on their stomache. Keep them on puppy chow.

there is more nutrition in the puppy food and especially the larger dogs that take 2-3 years to be full grown should stay on teh puppy food for the proper nutrition. without the proper nutrition the same as humans can cause health problems.
