The whole idea of gods/goddess was, I believe, made up originally to explain the unexplainable. Primitive man sees lightning and can't explain it; must be gods. Lightning is destructive; the gods must be angry. Must appease the gods.
Oh, and the gods were really just like peole, only all-powerful. Oh, and some people could actually talk to these gods, so they were powerful.
Didn't take much from there for religion to become a tool to control the ignorant masses.

Primitive people were very afraid. They didn't have a clue as to what was going on in their world. Lightening & thunder can be terrrifying if you don't know what's going on. The people were told that there was a God/Goddess in control who used these things if they were bad. The blame was shifted to a third party who wanted them to be good and would punish them if they were bad. The wise ones became the middle-man and called themselves priests.

In a way
The only way we can understand the aspects of the universe is by personifying them! So there you go.
Pure abstract theory may work for Neuton and Einstein but for the rest of us plebs we need some visual aid for these concepts. There you go, Gods and Goddesses!

"Deities" are the natural reaction of concious minds to irreconcilable fears or desires; small children with no exposure to theology conceive of "monsters" when they face fears (such as darkness), and more often than not invent powerful imaginary guardians to help them cope.
Otherwise intelligent people suffering an embarrassment of riches will often attribute their "good fortune" (in comparison to others they see who are far more deserving but poor) to their own imagined piousness or faithfulness to one particular god or another.

All religion, yes all religion is humankind's attempt to explain that which cannot be explained. We look at nature and it declares the glory of a creator so we invent religion to explain that creator.
