I'm guessing you may not have properly introduced your two cats.
The kitten needs to kept in a room with a door for at least a week straight. You can then let the kitten out with supervision to meet your resident cat, but if you see any hostility from either cat, the kitten needs to go back into its room. Repeat until there isn't hostility between the two; it can take awhile.
Another you can do is let the kitten out to explore and put the resident cat into the kitten's room. This way, they will get used to each other's scents and the other's scent should no longer be viewed as hostile and foreign.
You'll also need to reassure the resident cat that she's the boss. Make sure you spend more time with the 1-year-old than the kitten. This will make your resident cat feel less threatened by the kitten and the new kitten will understand her place in your household.

I'm in the same boat!I bought a new kitten the other day and my one year old cat keeps hissing and trying to attack the little one. I've been keeping them separate and gradually letting the kitten round my cat. She seems to be calming down a little, just ensure she is getting lots of attention. After great advice from people on yahoo answers i feel it won't be long before they get along. Good luck!!

It does take time for the older cat to get used to the new one. I have two litter brothers who are 11 years old and they still fight maybe once a week and it's always under my bed where I can not reach them, they do this in the middle of the night, the water bottle is a good idea just a spray when the older one gets out of hand.

My cat was like that when I was watching a friends kitten. My cat got very jealous because the kitten was always by my side. I never though to introduce the two cats. I went to sleep one night and my cat attacked the kitten and killed it :(
Maybe its because your cat thinks you're paying too much attention to your kitten.

Whatever you do do not spray/hit/yell at your cats! They honestly dont know what they are doing wrong.. My cats dont get a long either but they dont fight like that chances are I think that the older cat will ignore the smaller one as she matures. Mine occaisionaly have the hiss, and protective pat/hit because my 2 year old will plop on her side and tease my 12 year old. :\ They are a mess. Make sure you give them enough attention, brushing, petting, rubbing your older cats ears. Anything that will make them think they are still the most special kitty in your life :] good luck

Usually it takes about 2 weeks for them to get used to each other. Sometimes longer, and very rarely never. I have 4 cats, and the second one i got hates all the ones I got after her. She loves the one that was here before her, but the 2 most recent ones she absolutely hates, and its been almost 2 years

you should help get the old cat to get used to the new kitten. you could also spend time with both cats.

well make sure theyre in seperate rooms, or just spend time with both cats together. make sure that they like each other by the end of the week. if not, use someone else's solution!
