Been to Indonesia many times. When I first went(pre sept 11th/tsunami days) everything was friendly and nice in those days but after all the happenings I saw a change in the people because tourism was very very low.People were scamming and theft was a real problem and still is now as the people depend on tourism but now have got so poor they are starting to rob.I think it's a real shame!! Just be careful in Sumatra if you go up to Pulau Weh.If you get the night bus up to Acha you can get soldiers firing the bus through with bullets and shooting tourists.Check the situation out beforehand and if it's too dodgy wait for the boat which used to be every week but take your own food unless you want to be pushing and shoving for over an hour for a boiled fish head-ooh and groped if you're a woman!

I already DID live a year there in 1998! It was beautiful! ...B-U-T..they had like MEGA riots. We could easily have died 'cause they "just happened "to stop burning houses about a block and a half from where we lived or I wouldn't be here to tell about it. We got down on our knees and prayed, like LOUD! You know what a burning shopping center smells like? Like a lotta plastic!
You can NEVER be sure what's gonna happen in Indo, even if you live in Bali! (Civilized Inonesia). It's like heaven and hell-on earth all at once. Depends on who you meet and who you deal with!
Nothing to do with rich and poor. Being poor is no excuse for anarchy, evil, or stealing, rape or murder. Honest Muslims were WORKING on those days, even though they earned less than 25 cents a day. They wouldn't have CONSIDERED stealing cause the know it's WRONG. I SAW them. But people who live in darkness will go for just about anything..they think they can "do evil that good may come". By the way, it was not the "poor" who benefited from that "Black Thursday" it was the city dwelling riff-raff, and the opposition. 500 people burned, that day, in fires that they had set themselves due to GREED! The poor are as poor as ever!
Nobody FORCED anyone to buy from Chinese. The Chinese were frugal, the Indonesians slept for the most part. By the way, you take all the Chinese away, and they'll be fighting with each other. Who are you gonna blame for your plight THEN???

My main concern is raising the fare. So.......if you're paying I'll come, but don't ask me to carry anything for you on my return trip!
Seriously I'd love to come, as for the comments regarding crime/terrorism I don't take much notice of all that it doesn't put me off as they are everywhere in the world. I went to Nepal when they had a problem and although there were alot of soldiers etc about I had a great trip and never had a problem at all.
I believe in fate....whatever happens to you in this life where ever you are was meant to happen to you.
Thanks and I hope I get to see Indonesia one day it's on my list of places to go along with Thailand and South and Central America.
