In Rome, make sure you also see the Piazza Navona, the Trevi fountain(don't forget to toss your coin in) and the Spanish steps. These are all in walking distance from each other and are wonderful in the evening. Make sure to get some gelato (ice cream) on that walk. The catacombs are also very interesting. There is a great restaurant directly across the street from the Catacombs of St. Sebastian called Cecilia Metella. don't miss it!

Before u go ,travel to Barnes and Nobles ( or any book store)to buy a quick reference guide of Italian, was money well spend since it has the most common words to use, where is the rest room? How much it cost? Etc, it is a nice quick guide to have, on your day to the Vatican wear comfortable shoes climb all the way to the top of the Basillica, the best view of Rome from there, you must go to Pompei and it is true take the train and the ride it just amazing, after pompei, go to south to Sorento nice little town, and from there go to the island of Capri, worth every penny( the euro is very strong rigth now, so it will cost u) on the Amalfi coast is one of the most beautiful places on all of Italy, plus the are some Roman and Greeks ruins to make day trips worht while. concernig security just be on the look out for gypsies, and be aware of pickpockets as they can spot a tourist a mile away!! Italy was very safe when we traveled and it is not different than being in a big city (Rome,Naples,Milano) so get your walking shoes ur camera ready and enjoy ur trip, PACE.

We went to Italy last May and it was wonderful. We visited at the perfect time, mid April to mid-May. We heard that the summer, especially August is a nightmare. August is when most Europeans vacation. So if you can adjust the time you visit a bit to avoid mid-May through the end of August you will save yourself money and have a better vacation. In Florence we mentioned that there seemed to a be lot of tourists and the banker said that in a month (by June) there would 5 times the number and the streets were hard to navigate because of the people. Loved Siena. We used Rick Steve's guide and found it very helpful.

I was in Italy way back when travel was safe and had a wonderful time.
Mu siggestion to you is to stick with the locals, they know where it is at and they make better guides than anything written.
Of course, if there are places you don't want the family to know you have been at, a day trip by yourself or with the help of the local tourism office may be a better choice.
I had a great time, nothing negative happened and I would do it again in the same circumstances.
Have fun.

Make some time to discover a region off the beaten path: Le Marche. It's little known but has a lot to offer.
Buon viaggio!
