FACT, whether you like it or not, the USA has had a system of of universal healthcare for GENERATIONS !!!!! No, you say?? What the hell is the VETERANS HEALTH CARE SYSTEM??? I am a veteran, I am in two cancer research programs in the V.A. system, so as to find ways to help the future victims.( Some men grow cotton, some corn, some cattle, me? I grow tumors!) Does anyone know the average cost, per visit/ per condition/ per treatment/per Vet, and what are the costs for the same situations in the public sector ?? I am requesting responces from ACTUAL MILITARY SERVICE, CURRENT and VETERANS and YOU, THE Y/A FOLKS : HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE CARE PROVIDED, at the local Clinics and the V.A. Hospitals?? Comparing the V.A. system to the care in the private sectors??

Thanks for the inputs. I AM A VET (69), and have been in the system for about 9 years now. My question was not to cast aspursions upon OUR system, but to gather your inputs, so to be able to better answer the quieres from the private sector/s, about the overall care provided. I have been very happy with the hospitals in both Dallas and Houston. ( By the way, we are addressing tumors #7 & #8, as I type this out, using two (2) fingers at a time) !!!
Keep the answers coming, I will wait awhile, before making a very diffacult choise, about the best answer !!! THANKS, Uncle Wil a.k.a. Lonnal W.

Answer:
Where would you be without the VA
You, Me and a whole bunch of other Vets. The VA isn't the best care anywhere but it is good medical care. Medicare is cash driven and the doctors make their money doing "procedures" on you, need them or not.
I always use the VA to verify if I really need the procedure or is the doctor padding the bill

I'e been using the VA system for nearly 20 years and have found that the system has improved greatly. Yes arranging appointments in difficult at time, but its worth the wait too me as I live off my retirement and SS.
Do you know where else you can get a months supply of medication for $8. If so, let me know and other vets.
My VA hospital is a teaching hospital of the University Hospital System one of the countries best.
Those vets who don't speak up deserve what kind of care the receive.
Make phonecalls and write letters to the hospital directors.
Patient Advocates are usually worthless VA employes not good enough to work in the canteen.

I can't answer for the costs, and I can only answer for my local VA, but I've found to be the medical care very competitive to the private sector hospitals and clinics.
The food is even pretty decent, although they don't feed me enough. ;-)
The only thing that I don't like is sharing a room with 3 other guys. When I'm there, I'm sick and miserable and the last thing I want to do is talk to anybody. But, since I'm not paying for the care, I can't complain too much.
Overall, I'd give the VA a 7 (out of 10). Considering what they have to work with, they do a damn fine job for us.

Care in most Veteran's Administration hospitals and clinics is fairly equal and, in some places better than private care. It does take some time to get into the system and that is the biggest problem for todays veterans. another thing that seems to be lost on the public at large is that the president and legislators that talk about, for and against universal health care, have for themselves free access to health care for their entire lives, not to mention a very nice retirement income.

I'm a veteran who has received private medical care and VA care. The VA is slower and the overall quality of service is not as high, but VA care is still better than the public systems in Canada, France, Germany and the U.K.

WOW I earned universal health care. I didn't know it existed after all Universal Health Care is given to all for no reason at all except that all would have health care. Key Word here being ALL not just vets. And we still pay for a portion of the care.
