I am not a Citizen of the UK. I am a US Citizen and flying to the UK to see some friends. I am not sure how long I will be there for. I know you can be there for up to 6 months without a Visa. But what my concern is when I fly over there, will I be allowed to gain entry into the UK without a round trip ticket? I heard that some countries, I am not sure, want to know that if you fly there, you need to show proof you plan on leaving.

Two reasons I am doing that this way.

1) I do not know when I will return to the US.
2) I do not have enough money to purchase a round trip.

Now, I know I can purchase a roundtrip and chang ethe date for a fee. But like I said, I will not have the money right now to purchase a roundtrip. I will not be working in the UK but I will have some money freed up next month which will allow me to purchase a one-way ticket back. Also, I do have enough money to be self sufficient if I budget. I do have constant income whether I am in the US or not.

Yes you will need a return ticket to gain entry to the UK. Just leave the return portion "open".

If you have money coming in a short while, then best you wait until such time you are in a position to purchase what you need.

Believe it or not, despite what people think on here, it is harder to gain entry to the UK. You have to provide evidence at the airport on arrival that you have an address to go to, money to support you during your stay. So promises of money coming in the very near future will not work with our immigration department.

If you want to check to see if anything I have told you is incorrect suggest you contact the British Embassy.

You are best served buying a roudtrip ticket leaving the return trip open. It is cheaper in the long run. If you do not have the funds to purchase a roundtrip at this time, you probably do not have enough for a one-way fare. One-way fares are usually higher and you can often get a roundtrip at a better price than even the one-way fare. Entering the UK without a return ticket is allowed, but you may be asked to show proof that you can support yourself while there. The point is that a one-way far, while doable, is going to end up costing you more in the long run and it will raise a flag at customs and immigartion when you arrive.

You are going to have a terrible time gaining entry to the UK.

Buy a round trip ticket with the return date left "open." When you know the date you'd like to return you call the airline and book your flight with the open return portion of the ticket. Most airlines will allow you to leave the date open for up to a year.

Check the UK government website, but more than likely you need a roundtrip ticket, or proof that you can afford a round trip ticket. Most countries need that.

It would be better to buy the round trip so you don't get striped searched.

You can book it for the maximum visa stay `3 months or Six months with approval. Then pay to have the ticket changed to the date you want to fly.

You should be deported and treated as a criminal because thats how americans think anyone coming over the USA border is.

But besides that just tell immigration/customs that you may be going on to Europe and then to Aus your plans are not set in stone as to which country last before you go home.
