We just got this kitten, it's about 10 weeks old but it very bad, and it always gets the older cats very angry, the older cat isn't its mother or anything, and the older cat isn't playful.
And he always trys to run away.
Is there any way to tell the cat whos boss, and to teach him what he can and cannot do physically without hurting the cat.
I don't think spraying it with water is enough.

okay,
all these answears are the "long time" disipline.
whatever u do do not leave it alone in a room.Definantly not a good idea this person doesnt know what he is saying. i have a bengal cat and he is 5 generations away from the wild. so he likes water... its not gonna do anything but scare the cat since im sure it doesnt like water. unless its a bengal..hahaa.
whenever he does something against ur liking pick up the kitten one hand under the two front arms(the arm pits) and one hand right behind the stomache so like slide ur hand from where ur other 1 is down the body untill u cant go any further cause the hindlegs are in the way.
hold him just about forehead hight facing u. then say no and blow on his face. it will stun him and he will stop for a lil while. if he doesnt do this again and say no and blow in his ear. it doesnt hurt him but if u ceep doing this in the diferent parts of the body, saying no, he will sooner or later get it and start anoying something else...
I hope i helped and if u need any more help with ur kitten ask me at golden_wannabee@yahoo.com
i would be more than happy to give advise...
,Syd...

Kittens play, they have to, it's what they do.
Side track him with toys, and give the other cat some peace by closing the door between them for an hour or so. A kitten won't respond to negatives very well because they have a hard time making the connection of 'no play with that', so get him interested in something else, a piece of paper sliding back and forth under the door, some paper balls, a ping pong ball in the bathtub, or use a laser pointer to have him chase the red dot.
Until he's about 5 or 6 months old, he's going to need to burn off energy, then after that they usually calm down a lot. There is no 'boss' with a cat. It's all 'equals', you need to think like a cat to get him to do what you want. Positive reinforcement or gentle redirection works 90 times better than negative reinforcement and your cat will end up listening to you a lot more than if you're always yelling at him or telling him no.
Never hit a cat, it's not a training method that works and you could hurt him. Praise the good things, give food rewards if you like, but use your voice tone and certain words to get his attention and train him.

Kittens at that age love to wrestle with each other. He's just following his instincts.
I would be inclined to let the cats sort it out. At some point Big Cat will get tired of being tackled and will give little cat a whap or two. (Don't worry, claws will be in)
Once Big Cat is used to the new little stranger he may be more tolerant.
We have a playful kitten and a grouchy old boy. Sometimes Grouchy lets plays with the kitten. Sometimes he gives him a swat. Sometimes Grouchy and Kitten go to sleep on the same cushion.

That's perfectly normal for a kitten and he and the older cat will work out their relationship eventually. The older cat is actually the best teacher. He is not "bad".
You might go to http://www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article "Squirt bottles, Punishment and Cat Behavior" for tips on dealing with the kitten's obnoxious (to you) behaviors. The articles are in alphabetical order by title so that one is towards the end of about fifty.

First of all, as I'm sure you know, there is never a reason to hurt an animal as this is barbaric behavior.
Your kitten is 10 weeks old and naturally they are playful at this age. The other cats will let him know when enough is enough. Buy him some kitty toys and play with him to keep him occupied. He'll outgrow this.

You can also try disciplining your kitten as a mother cat would, by "scruffing" the kitten. Pick the kitten up by the scruff of the neck (the loose skin at the base of the neck) and lightly blow in the kitten's face or make a hissing sound. Picking the kitten up by the scruff will not hurt him. I'm sure you've seen mother cats carrying their kittens this way.

use a water bottle =) That is what I do for my cats and dogs. When ever they are doing something that they aren't suppose to...I just say no and spray them on the nose. It doesn't hurt them, it just catches their attention and helps them learn what no means. Spanking a cat won't teach it anything but to fear you. And locking it up when it does something wrong, in my experience, that never worked either, just time and patience and a water bottle always available. Best wishes with your new kitty =)

Maybe you should let the cats decide who is going to be boss. If the cats are mixed gender they are trying to find the dominant cat. There is nothing you can do they will either figure it out or you will need to find a new home for one of the cats. You can try to keep them from fighting by using the spray bottle but most likely they will keep fighting.

I think you are on the right track with the spray. Maybe try a spray bottle that makes a louder noise cause that is what gets them. But you have to remember it is in a kittens nature to be playful. You might also try playing with the kitten yourself to get out its extra energy I bet it would love it!

Cats don't respond to physical discipline. You will only hurt the kitten physically and "emotionally" and make it afraid of you. Take a can and fill it with marbles. Whenever the kitten is doing something wrong, shake the can - the loud noise will stop the behavior immediately. After awhile, the kitten will stop the behavior because they associate the behaviour with the loud, scary noise of the marbles in the can.
