If you really like Merlot, but want to tone it down a bit, try one of the fruit flavored versions from California. We especially like the raspberry or blackberry ones, or Rose` is making a strong comeback and a nice choice. However, a true wine connesiour, would be offended by these choices.

If you kinda "almost" like the Merlot you've tried, you probably just haven't found the right one yet. I would suggest you continue to try different ones (not necessarily more expensive) and give Cabernets a shot too. The taste varies a lot from one to another and different years too. It's fun to experiment!

maybe a pinot noir or a grenache. Spain makes some great grenache.

Most red "table" wines are very mild.
