The legal requirements and one's rights depend on whetehr one is being interrogated or is the interrogator. In the U.S. the Miranda rights are a basic guide. One has the right to remain silent and to have an attorney present during questioning. It is also understood that anything one says can and will be used against them in a court of law. The questioning can be redorded, but not secretly and, though one may be asked to take or ask to take a lie detector test, the results are not admissable in court.
