If you want to keep the program on your PC, but just not have it start automatically when you start your PC then do not do Add/Remove Programs. Here are some ways to stop the program from starting automatically when you start your PC.

Many programs have some sort of Preferences or Options menu that may have a setting to Start Automatically When The Computer Starts or something similar that you can disable.

Another way is to click on the Start button at the lower left of your PC Desktop. Select All Programs and move the pointer over the Startup folder. Navigate through the menus until you find the item you want to remove. Right-click the item you want to remove, and select "Delete" from the menu that appears. The item will be moved to the Recycle Bin, and can be restored, if needed, until the Recycle Bin is emptied.

A little less safe way is to click on the Start button and select Run. Type "msconfig" in the box (without the quotes) and select OK. Select the Startup tab. Scroll through the list of Startup Items and see if you can find an item with some part of the program name of the program you don't want to have start automatically. You can also expand the "Command" column by clicking and dragging the divider bars at the top to see names of file locations. That might help determine if a Startup Item is the program you are interested in. If you find it then remove the check from the little box beside the name of the Startup Item. Select OK. Then either select Restart or Exit Without Restart if you don't want to restart your computer at this time. If you select Exit Without Restart then you should restart your PC soon to verify the program doesn't start automatically and that you computer starts properly after you changed the settings.

If these tips don't work then there are a number of programs available for free or low cost on the internet that will also disable startup programs and cleanup the list of items in the msconfig program. Search on "msconfig cleanup" or "startup manager" to see some of the things that are out there.

Good luck.

This answer depends on the program. If it is a legitimate program, most will have a preferences or options tab when the program is open and you will be able to from there choose a click box to set the program not to start with windows.

If not, you can check the start menu/programs listing for a folder called startup - see what is listed in that folder and right click on the programs you don't want to start and choose Delete. This will not delete the program itself but rather delete the shortcut in the startup folder to keep the program from starting up when windows starts.

If that fails you can use more advanced methods like selecting the start menu then choosing run and typing msconfig - this depends on your operation system. If you type MSCONFIG and click OK you should see a panel open titled system configuration utility. check under the tab labeled Startup and uncheck any unwanted programs. Then click apply and OK. Restart your computer, the program should have not started.

I would highly recommend using the programs options panel first before using MSCONFIG. If the program does not have an option in its setting/preferences to stop the loading at startup then use msconfig. There is also registry keys that control startup programs, but that is a little intimidating for more users and I would not recommend this unless you have a professional help you understand what regedit is all about.

You don't want to uninstall the program, you just don't want it to start every time Windows starts? Click on Start, in Run type msconfig. When that opens, select Startup. Remove the checkmark ONLY by that program you don't want to open at startup. Close the box and follow the prompts. If it tells you to restart the computer for the change to take effect, then restart it. Windows XP will bug you about the change, and if it does, there is a little box you can check that stops the reminder.

Click Start and the Run. In the run box, type "msconfig" without the quotes and then hit "Enter". This will open the System Configuration Utility. Click the "Startup" tab. Now remove the check mark from any and all programs that you do not want to start or "boot" with Windows. Now click apply and then click OK.

You will need to restart your system. When the system starts you will see a box stating that you used the Config. utility, put a check in "Don't show this box at startup".

That should do it.

Do not remove any check marks from your security software. You want it to load with your operating system.
