My car is registered in VA and I always thought that all registration costs were the same for all cars. Why does it cost more to register my car than my friends?

Do they go by vehicle value and if so, since when did they begin assessing different registration costs?

from what i understand in the link above it goes by the duration of your registration and your vehicles weight.

The difference in the registration cost is associated with the value of the car. It is a kind of "ad valorem" or value added tax. Many southern states use this method of taxation. Mosts states have a standard registration fee.

Why not walk into the nearest DMV with your registration and ask? That way you would be getting the most possible correct answer.

a lot of times it depends on the type make and model of the car but if you owe on the car could play apart in that because what your paying for resgiteration is taxes
