I have a 1996 Ford explorer with 145k miles on it. When I reach about 60 mph the truck kind of shook and started riding rough, but then it was ok when i got to 70mph. The check gage light came on. Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem would be?

It sounds like an O2 sensor has gone bad. I suggest you drive over to a parts store where they offer a free analysis. These places will plug an engine analyzer into your engine's computer and find out exactly what the problem is.

Good luck.

The "check gage" light is your vehicle's way of letting you know that something is wrong with your emissions system. It can often be something minor that you won't need to diagnose right away. BUT if your vehicle is running any differently while the light is on it is definitly something you should bring to your dealership. They will hook up a diagnostic tester to your pcm (the main computer) and pull whatever codes have been stored. These codes will pin-point the location of the part which is malfunctioning. There is usually a charge, but it's worth it instead of letting the problem get worse. Good luck to you! I know that car problems can be aggrivating!

Interesting that no one has mentioned the difference between check gage and check engine lights. Check gage light tells you that the fuel gage is low, or the temp gage is high. It has nothing to do with the check engine light or codes.

With out knowing what codes are set in it, this is my guess. If you have the SOHC 4.0 motor then my guess is the lower intake gaskets are sucked in. Once the motor gets hot the swell enough and stop leaking, also there is a vacuum hose for the PCV that is known to suck in and crack. But with out the codes it is hard to say, AUTO ZONES will do a free scan and tell you the codes, just don't let them sell you anything till you post back the codes.

It looks like everyone here agrees with Danielc. Why they bother to answer questions that already have a good answer I will never understand. Just give the guy credit for being right, don't try to make it sound like it was your own idea!

Daniel is probably right, that's what it was on mine and you have to get if fixed to pass smog. they're 4 of them, but usually only one goes bad, so you have to have the codes pulled to find out which one.
