I've got a mk2 P reg Mondeo with damp carpet on the passenger side of my car. its mainly at the back (proper saturated) but also at the front.

After scanning many of the owners club forums and ripping up a bit of carpet i think i've tracked it down to coming from the centre pillar (the A frame?). what ideas can you think of as reasons, and how can i best do a bodge DIY fix?

any ideas? the car was only £400 on ebay, so i don't want to take it to a garage and get charged a quarter of its value to get it fixed.

The "A" pillar is the one next to the windshield and the front window. The "B" pillar is the one that is between the front side window and the rear side window. If it is leaking there, then it sounds like the weatherstripping is not sealing and water is leaking in. If it is leaking underneath the dash, it could be a clogged condensate drain for the AC.
Since you don't want to take it to a shop, you'll have to dig into and keep going until you find the problem. You can also use a garden hose and spray water onto the top and sides of the car while you look to see where the water is coming in from.

A cheap way to stop the water is to use bathroom silicone. This will stop the problem for a while.Probable causes could be door seal rubbers split or if the windscreen has been replaced they never seal the pollen filter properly and this causes water to come in behind the dash and then onto the floor area. This again can be done using silicone sealant (located by lifting bonnet and looking around bottom rubber of windscreen on passenger side bottom corner).

How is the car for rust?

My old Escort developed a wet carpet in the rear passenger footwell and under the front seat passenger seat. Turned out the underside of the car was rusting away so water and spray from the road was finding it's way in.

Just another possibility.

Water leaks in a car will always appear worse in the rear footwells, its the lowest part of the floor!Could be a badly fitted screen or Mondeos are prone to leaking at the air intake for the heater. This is located under the scuttle panel at windscreen wipers also check drains in same area are not blocked with leaves/sediment,cr*p etc. Good luck!
Water leaks are a nightmare to trace!!!
P.s Do not use silicone!(keep that for sealing baths!)
Try and obtain windscreen bond or 'sikaflex'

Also it might be the washer tube that carries the washer fluid to the rear window. Most cars have it going through the car under the carpet, Im a car valeter and have had loads of cars with this problem come to us.
