Black seems a little dour for an afternoon wedding. Try something more colorful.

Black is appropriate for many occasions, and it seems that many people break 6pm rule in New York. I was once invited to what I thought was an afternoon wedding, so I chose a beautiful, pearly pink suit. Which would have been fine for any other wedding, but not this one. Eighty percent of the women there were in black. I think they dressed for the reception which followed, (by the time contract was signed and the ceremony took place, it was 6 pm). Maybe some of this is dictated by local custom. At any rate, if it is truly an afternoon wedding, I would break up black with another color--try not to go entirely in black. Also, September might be warm, so you might want to consider that when choosing an outfit.

Weddings aren't considered 'formal' until after 6 P.M., at which point everyone should be dressed properly. Suits for the men and dressier skirts or dresses for the women.
An afternoon wedding is dressy, but not formal and any seasonal color is appropriate ... black is fine.

How lovely. Black is "always" perfect attire for any semi- or formal event. What about your shoes? Jewelry? You might even add a light shawl or shoulder wrap that's colorful if you want to break up the black. Usually, people would wear black shoes, black purse, yadda, yadda...but fashion today does not dictate all black. You can use silver, or gold to accompany the black. Even red! Be perky and wear your hair up with wisps of hair hanging from the ear and neck to show off your earrings. (that is, if you have long to medium hair), Moderate makeup with some color is acceptable but not heavy. And a dash of your favorite perfume or cologne and lotion to match.

Afternoon weddings aren't formal... formal begins at sunset or late afternoon. If it is late afternon, your pretty dress would be appropriate. But if this is an earlier wedding, ( 2:00-3:00), a dress with color would be more appropriate.

I think that black would be severe for an afternoon wedding (plus it's a bit of a faux pas to wear black to a wedding. Not as bad as white but . . .). If you can break it up or lighten it with a shawl you might be able to get away with it (can't say more without seeing the dress)

It is an afternoon wedding, so more color would be the preference. However, it is a formal wedding, so black would be OK, but a color would be better.

I think the empire waist style will help off set the gravity that black can sometimes suggest. Maybe pair it with a colorful necklace or white shoes. I'm sure you'll look fine as long as it doesn't look like you're going to a funeral.

Black is not appropriate for afternoon. Colour is best.

if youve already purchased the dress, run with it. i like the white shoes idea. additions could include color ful jewelery or a seasonal scarf or shawl. accesories will make or break this outfit. if you havent purchased it i would suggest somthing a little more colorful.
