I will be having dinner with my boyfriend's family in a country club-type setting. I was told it was dressy casual and was wondering if black jeans and a nice top would be acceptable. What do you think?

I wouldn't chance it. Quite often dressy-casual means you just don't have to wear a dress, but jeans of any color are not right. Going with slacks and a blouse is a much safer choice. Better to be on the safer side in this situation. You would feel much more comfortable. Keep your accessories and makeup to a classy minimum and make sure you are aware of all the right dinner table etiquette. It might help also to think of a couple of items for conversation.
Good luck and have fun.

Dressy Casual Jeans

It depends on the fit. If they are 80's style with tapered legs, then no. If they are flared at the bottom and cover most of your shoe, I think that would be fine if you wore a fancy blouse and jewelry and dramatic make up.

Of course, if you arent sure you might want to opt for a dress. Black jeans come in many different styles and even colors of black. Some dont even look like jeans. But, it is better to be dressed too formally rather than not dressy enough. Maybe you could even call the venue and ask them if it would be appropriate. They'll be happy to give you some advice.

If something is casual, I take it as neat jeans are ok. Im not a fan of black jeans tho.... Dress em up with some nice accessories and a dressy top and have a ball!!!

I have found that black jeans are acceptable for relatively up-scale get-togethers (short of what is required to wear a suit), where blue jeans would not be acceptable, being only acceptable in the most casual venues.

I don't know why the colour makes the difference, but black jean have a class that blue jeans do not (although it is not as up-scale as GQ class).

My preference is in-between blue jean casual and GQ up-scale, as one is too casual and the other is too fancy for my personality - it is just me, I guess.

I don't think jeans of any color would be appropriate for a country club dinner. Dressy casual would be khaki's and a nice shirt for guys, no jacket or jacket no tie. You would be better with a dressier pant outfit or a casual dress.

Personally, I wouldn't wear the jeans.

It's your first time at the location, maybe try wearing a pair of Dockers or casual slacks like that. You can then check out what others are wearing and adjust for the next time.

Better to be a bit overdressed with slacks than to wear jeans and be under dressed.

yea that would be dressy but also casual because of the jeans. you should also add some accessories to the outfit to make it more dressy just to be sure. have fun at the dinner.
