If you're looking for something high quality - chances are you won't be able to buy it online. You'll have to find a professional bridal salon in your area. They will measure you and buy the dress that will fit your body. Of course you may require some alterations, but it shouldn't be anything extreme.

I've heard very happy brides who get the custom made gowns from ebay. They are usually the designer knockoffs so you save thousands and they are beautiful...I have my eye on one right now.
THIS IS A GREAT SITE AND THEY ARE RUNNING A SALE WHERE YOU GET YOUR TIARA FOR A PENNY: WWW.BRIDALONLINESTORE.COM most dresses are under $500 and they have a return policy in case you don't like it.
Buying online can work out in your favor as long as you do your homework. With Ebay I wouldn't buy from anybody that doesn't have at least 100 feedbacks with an overall satisfaction of 99%
With websites, check the better business bureau to see if there are any complaints, and find out how long they have been in business. Many of are reputable like HouseofBrides.com but every once in a while you hear about a bride who orders a dress but the new website goes out of bussiness and she's stuck without a dress. Go with your gut. If the page looks shabby and you aren't sure don't buy from them just because the price is right.

I found some gorgeous antique and contemporary dresses on ebay a few years ago when I was looking. Not sure you are wanting that, but check it out. You would be surprised how many people buy more than one and then sell the rest on ebay. I got one from a girl that had bought 4 dresses because she kept finding one she liked better. It was gorgeous and a very expensive dress for very little and all I had to do was get it taken in. Good luck and don't let the wedding planning, dress shopping and all that get out of control so that you can't enjoy the celebration!

hHouseofbrides.com and RKbridal.com both have a reputation of excellent quality and service. They are official dealers of all the manufacterers they advertise, and the prices are great
RK bridal has a lowest price guarantee and their prices include S&H
Also try: dorianneveils.com (also great prices); netbride.com; and pricelessbridals.com
Many of these dresses will be available as samples in local bridal shops, so you can try it on in a shop and then buy it online for convenience & price. Do NOT tell bridal salons you plan to buy your dress online--they get mad at losing business, and might tell manufacterers, jeopardizing online bridal shops for future brides.
Good luck!!!

what kind of dress are you looking for? Destination weddings often get prom dresses or quinceanera dresses. Thats a good idea for something less formal b/c you can get it so much cheaper.
www.bridalonlinestore.com has some beautiful things
I have also known someone who ordered from ebay. My good friend had hers custom made from china and it was absolutely perfect. she gave all of her measurements and it came just as described, no alterations needed.
http://www.bestbridalprices.com
www.juliusbridal.com
www.netbride.com
-are just a few of the ones I've heard of on here.
