Cheaper and actually a little easier to manufactur. Some truth to the strategic mineral comment. The main reason we have helium ballons at parties is because it is a strategic material.
Back to the subject. There have been many advances in ceramic tech. that allow for designing in specific properties like wear rates. Also ceramics can be produced in complex shapes and are generally more chemical resistant.

Many elements (like tungsten used for tungsten carbide) come from very specific areas of the world. Tungsten for example is almost entirely produced and exported from China, so it is important that substitutes are avaliable in case relations sour with source countries.
