The largemouth bass has a mouth that extends past the rear of the eye, while the smallmouth bass the mouth only extends to near the center of the eye. Also largemouth have a dark horizontal band along the body while the smallmouth has several vertical dark bands.

It's been a while since I was all into fishing but I believe they are right. If you check out "Fishes of Ohio" by Dr. Milton B. Trautman it may tell you. He was a Dr. who spent his time catagorizing fish. And yes the large mouth bass has a large mouth and a jaw bone that extends beyond the eye, the smallmouth's jaw bone doesn't. If you lay the fish down on its side with the mouth closed you'll see that.

It's because of the size of their mouth. If you look at a Smallmouth bass, you'll notice that their mouth is considerably smaller.
