That really just depends on your ratio of calorie input vs energy output throughout the day. Eating the right stuff, like cottage cheese or other sources of dairy protein can help keep your metabolism burning all night long. The important thing is to eat smaller balanced meals throughout the day, every 2-3 hours while staying within your caloric needs.
Also, try to steer clear of carbs 5-6 hours before bedtime, they’re less likely to be converted to energy as you wind down for the day and more likely to stick around in places where you don’t want them.

Don't eat anything 2-3 hours prior to going to bed
1. you will put on some weight
2. have strange dreams
3. wake up really hungry

If I eat anything within 2 hours of going to sleep I wake up starving (acids burn the food throughout the night causing hunger in the morning, if you don't eat before going to sleep less acid, less hunger.
Eating and laying there sleeping = not burning off the calories

It doesnt matter what time of the day you eat as long as you dont consume more calories than spend during the day you will not gain weight - its all about calories in vs calories out.
If you are hungry - eat.

Barring any other activities other than your daily routine, it takes about 4-6 hours before you completely digest your last meal, so I guess about 6-8 pm is fine, if you do get hungry after that, eat green salads and low fructose fruits (such as citrus fruits) as snacks before sleeping.
