This is the first place your body targets when you are dehydrated. Drink lots of water! I recommend purified water and mineral water mixed 50/50. The mineral water is going to put back into the muscles what they are losing on a daily basis.
I suggest that adults and children drink 40 ounces of water per 100 pounds of body weight every day. Realize that exercise, ambient temperature, and state of health affect the water needs of your body. One tip for athletes: it is healthier to drink a sports drink or water than fruit juice, soda, coffee, or milk during competition or active training periods.
In the evening take a hot bath with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts and soak for 30 minutes. Afterwards , if you have something shaped like a cylinder and made out of hard material (think of a large rolling pin you would use for pizza dough or something) place it under your leg and push down and roll it back and forth...this should massage the spasms out of your leg. It will hurt while you're doing it, but more so the type of pain that actually feels good, in the long run.

I used to get leg cramps all the time when I was pregnant with my first child. The pain was so bad it would wake me up in the night. I mentioned it to my mother and right away she said..... "You need calcium and magnesium" She was very into natural remedies and she had a bottle of each in her cabinet and gave them to me. Within 2 days of taking them I never had another leg cramp. Go to a health food store and ask what the best kind is ( I used Natures Sunshine) don't buy the cheap ones from the drug store (some of them are not worth it and won't have the potency you need.) I will swear by the calcium and magnesium. But I have also heard that if you take a bar of soap ( like ivory) and put it by your legs at night while you sleep it will stop the cramps. Weird I know but I have read about this from several people who swear by it when nothing else worked. Wish I knew if you are going to try this and what the results are if you do. I highly recommend the calcium and magnesium first though just because it worked for me. Wish I had a way of knowing if you tried this and the end results. Good luck. EDIT: Just read the answer below mine and bananas are loaded with potassium you could be low on that too but whatever it is I am betting you are low on one of these minerals.

I'm a retired nurse. An old country doctor told me once to drink tomato juice for these cramps as well as plenty of water. The tomato juice is loaded with potassium. You body loosing it is what causes the charlie horse in the first place. I thought the doctor was crazy actually ordering tomato juice for his patients in the nursing home where I worked, but it really does work.

Thought I'd check out the answers since I get them too and the are a total pain! I have to jump out of bed and stand on it or try to walk. I drink tons of fluids all day, so I'm not sure about the hydration thing. I'm not gonna eat salt as I have high blood pressure and that's not good for you. I think it's just something you gotta deal with.

your muscles need to be hydrated, and oxygenated. take deep breaths and drink plenty of water. as far as the pain, use a wet, moist washcloth on it for 20 minutes.
