The answer depends on whether you are a fundamentalist or a logical, thinking person. A fundamentalist believes that everything in the bible is 100% accurate - so if the bible says it was a serpent, then it WAS a serpent. Now an intelligent person can still believe in Jesus and realize that the bible has a few glitches. Like...a 600 year old man couldn't really build a boat large enough to hold 80 millions species of animals including Tyranasaurus Rex. Or that a snake talks to people!

If you are referring to the physical animal that was used as a stand in by Satan, the great original serpent, then it would have been some kind of snake.

However, Satan, perhaps a covering cherub, a high ranking angel, invisible to men unless he wanted otherwise -- used this animal to fool the still recently created Eve.

She had not yet experienced what each animal was and so -as the Bible says-- was fooled completely while Adam who had intimate knowledge about the animals was not fooled. He knew that the snake could not talk. He knew that some angel had talked to Eve.

Possibly, snakes are known to be symbols of evil in the bible but i won't jump to conclusions and say yes. I don't want to turn Gods word into a lie.
