I walk both my dogs on gentle leaders and find it amazing the amount of people who think they are muzzled they obviously can't tell the difference, one lady even told her children that my dogs were nasty dogs thats why they wore them, does anybody else have this trouble?

Yes I do. Well I did until my dog ate it. It was purple and it stood out very much. People were afraid of him (they are reguardless, boxer x) when they saw that. I would smile and say "he's quite the little puller", and explain what it was and also what it did. Some people didnt believe me but a lot more did believe and they then told me stories of their pups pulling, and said they would have to try one.

They are awesome though!!!! Work like a charm!! Since his little nylon fetish I have got him a Halti, and it works as well as the Gentle Leader. This is the one that can be a temporary 'muzzle'.

They do take a while for a dog to get used to them. Make very sure you have the G/Leader fitted and it is the correct size. Firstly show him the G/Leader and let him sniff it while giving him a treat and praising him. Do this a few times. Second day: it helps if you have someone with you. Have your helper feeding treats as you put the GL on the dog. Praise dog. Give more treats to take his mind off him getting the darn thing off him. Praise dog and remove the GL Next day: go through the same routine but leave the GL on for a minute. Extend the time the GL stays on for a couple of days by which time he hopefully will be getting used to it. A tip: Pop the lead upwards when he tries to pull. An upward pop will prevent jerking the dog's head around to the side. You can hold treats in your hand and let the dog know they are there. With any luck he will walk alongside you for the treats instead of forging ahead. Good luck. Many people don't like head collars but if used correctly there is no danger as long as you are not jerking the dogs head around. Never pull the lead around sideways, always pop upwards. Add: they are a management tool as some folk say but they help you control the dog. You can't train a dog you can't control. I used a Halti for 3 months and then went to a flat collar. My dog is trained to advanced obedience now and that wouldn't have happened without me gaining control with the Halti. Once I could control her I could train her.

That's because a great many non-dog owning people are nervous of dogs and believe all the rubbish that they read in the papers.

There are several different types of head collar and harness on the market some work some don't. I have work my dogs on head collars at one time or another and have had the same reaction. I always tell ignorant people that my dogs are house trained, well mannered, obedient and that I can take them anywhere and they won't show me up, can they honestly say the same about their kids 100 per cent of the time.

I then walk off with my nose in the air and hope that my dogs don't make a liar of me!!

I do not like the Gentle Leaders as the dog's mouth can not open fully, I use Haltis instead. I've never had anyone think it was a muzzle, they look just like a horse halter so maybe people figure them out more?

I haven't had this problem yet with my Halti but I'm certain I will. I had a feeling that someone would think that when I bought it. I figured, oh well. I have an overly friendly Bloodhound and people just love him so it should be easy to explain if I have a problem. I do understand how annoying that must be though. I would be quite upset if someone insulted my dog because of the headcollar.

I've never actually heard anyone commenting on my dog while he's wearing his halti, but i have had people staring at him thinking he's somehow aggresive. I find they are a god send as my dog is very strong, and at times he will walk to heal on a normal lead as we've been using the halti as a training aid, so were almost there with him.

The Halti worked wonders with my dog! Some people have wondered what it is for, and why I have it on my dog, but they understand once I explain it. Mine is a smaller mutt so I haven't been asked if he is a biter. He just used to go nuts on the leash yanking in every direction.

i've always thought of anything around the dog's mouth as a muzzle. i guess i'm wrong. i feel putting a gentle leader on a little dog just wont work. as well as embarassing since most people dont see little dogs as threatening
