I was just curious if they named the pasta noodle after something, or just came up with the word out of the blue.
And if it does mean something, then what does it mean?

Italians have names for each type of pasta like farfalle (Butterflies), penne rigate etc. so everybody knows exactly what they talk about.

It could also mean the sauce as in fettuccine Alfredo.

fettucine = fettucini or little ribbons - like most Italian pasta names, it's descriptive of the pasta itself - like "orechiette" means "little ears"
