Where do the punctuation marks such as "?" and "!" and ", " go within the parentheses in a sentence such as this? He ran to the door and asked her, "Why are you here" but she screamed at him, "Leave me alone" and ran back into the street.

He ran to the door and asked her, "Why are you here?" but she screamed at him, "Leave me alone!" and ran back into the street.

This is how it goes... All the punctuation marks (question mark, exclamation mark) go in the quotation marks (not parenthesis) because they show the intonation, the feeling or the exact way someone said something.. This helps reading the sentence in a colorful way...

The punctuation marks would go within the inverted commas:

He ran to the door and asked her, "Why are you here?", but she screamed at him, "Leave me alone!" and ran back into the street.

By the way, in my understanding parentheses are brackets ( ) rather than inverted commas.

Michael B., I'm an old timer. Times change with usage. I was always taught, punctuation goes inside quotation marks.

the ?-! are both written within the parenthesis.

the , however; should be outside.
