I have a cat who hides everytime my neices and nephews come to visit, or whenever the repairman comes over.... It is so funny... She just automatically hides, knowing she wants no part of it.

Because they usually are the ones who torture them.

Some cats are like that. However, most cats will hide when any stranger (male or female, friend or repair person) comes into your house. Maybe the cat just does not know them well enough, so the behavior of hiding somewhere is automatic . Also, cats, when they come into your house for the first time, usually hide under something (couch or bed) for a few days.

Cats, like people, come with many different personalities...I've had a cat that left the room anytime someone came to visit and I have a cat now that loves to see who's in the house and supervises the repair people to make sure they know what they are doing (smile). Now, concerning your nieces and nephews...maybe they harass the poor cat! How old are the children? I had two cats once, and when a friend of mine came to visit with her two children...the cats hid under my bed until those kids left! Now, I know you may not like what I'm about to say, but...maybe, just maybe, the cat just doesn't like the children or the repairman. Maybe the "right" man hasn't come around and the cat is waiting for "Mr. Right?" Do you think (smile)?
I hope my present and past experiences have helped you with understanding your cat...give her time...she just might warm up to nieces, nephews and repairmen (smile).

Cats can be strange. I know a lot of times little kids startle a cat by groping for them or squeezing, or trying to hug them. The more the kids come around the better, but they have to learn to approach the cat slowly and talk softly. Some cats are timid by breed. I have a Siamese that is very shy and likes to hide too. Eventually when the house quiets down from the company I may have, she comes out and keeps a low profile.

I haven't read any of the other answers, but my question is, have you had this cat since birth? If not, there may be a chance that your cat was, unfortunately, abused by a male or taunted by small children. One of my dogs was clearly abused by a male. It took him YEARS to stop peeing when my dad called after him just to pet him. He'd belly up to my dad and pee the whole way. He's gotten to where he doesn't cower down anymore, but he's still very uneasy around males, and takes a while to warm up to them. Also, for years, if we went to pet him near his backside, he would whip around to see what we were doing, and that was a clear sign that he was probably abused on his bottom. Anyway, if your cat has been with you since birth, then perhaps he can just tell that those people he runs from aren't animal people. Some may say it's crazy, but animals really do know when people don't like them. The same way babies (human) do.

Not all cats are afraid of men and children. I have 6 cats and of them only 1 hides when there is too much going on or a strange man comes in. Your cat just may not want to be around children if she was not raised around them, or they are way too active for her likes. It is not a problem, just love her and know this is how she is.

It just depends on the cat. Some are more aloof or easily frightened than others. I have two cats. One LOVES the repair men. He follows them around everywhere, plays with their keys and any tools they might put down. He loves to watch the lawn get mowed and the trees get trimmed from the window. My other cat runs the first sign of a stranger and still slinks around nervously hours after they have left.
On the flip side, mr friendly dislikes children and will retreat and watch them from afar with big eyes, but my scaredy cat loves them, and when the nieces and nephews come over, he rubs against their shins and purrs like a motorboat.

Some cats are naturally more shy than others. Our boy cat is never afraid of visitors, whereas our female hides till they are gone.

From a cat's eye view, humans look like giants. Generally men are larger than women, so may be seen as more intimidating. Children often have shrill voices which make some cats nervous and sometimes their handling of animals can be unitentionally rough.

Not all cats are just yours. Some are some are not. Feral cats run from everyone. They may be afraid of small kids because they are probably load and run around in an unpredictable manner. As far as men they are larger and they are more menacing. Also your cats don't really know the repairman. They might run from me too if I came over. Of course my cats don't like my husband either. Because they know he hates cats. More men like dogs than cats. Women are more gentle around them. Evita

Many cats do not like any changes, and someone coming into your house is a change, and they don't want to deal with it. Children can be energetic and noisy, and some cats don't like that, and repairmen bring in scents from other places they have been.

Some cats deal with company coming into the house very well, and others simply want nothing to do with the changes.
