My mom was diagnosed with an aneurysm and has to go through surgery. Does anyone know what the chances are of everything going ok or does anyone know anyone who had gone though this and what happened? Please be honest good or bad...

The aneurysm is on her brain, I know scary. I'm not able to be with her do to very unusual circumstances and we have no contact with her while she is in the hospital. We are all very worried and just want to know what may be going on right now.

I'm a critical care nurse working in ICU and have taken care of many patients pre and post-operatively aneurysm surgeries.

.
It's a very delicate situation. The patient is in a catch -22 dilemna. If you don't operate, the aneurysm might rupture and it's fatal. And even during the clipping surgery, the aneurysm might rupture; and it's very detrimental.

And if the pt makes it thru the surgery. The crucial time is on the third day. Vasospasm might occur on the third day, and the pt crashes.

The grim picture I referred to above is for cerebral aneurysm. So the morbidity rate is dependent on the location of the aneurysm. The prognosis is better for thoracic aortic or intra-abdominal aortic aneurysm. In here, it all depends on the skills of the surgeon and the technique used. So, I hope your mom has the latter.

Let me inform you though that surgery is the only mandatory treatment.

I hope with the grace of God, she might be one of the lucky ones to make it.

I don't meant to be depressing for you, but aneurysms are pretty dangerous. For percentages or chances of survival, you'll have to ask your mom's doctor because every situation is different, but since an aneurysm is an engorged blood vessel in the brain that can cause death upon rupture, your family might have to prepare for the very real possiblity that you mother may not survive surgery. I do know that catching them early improves the chances of survival, however.

As I am not a doctor, I have no idea. Please take everything I've said with a grain of salt. Your mom's surgeon would be the one best suited to answer your questions.

Good luck to you, your family, and your mother.

Truthfully, it all depends on your mom's health, where the aneurysm is located, how large it is, etc. There is absolutely NO way to predict. She should have gotten some information from her neurosurgeon regarding how common her type of surgery is, etc. and what problems are likely to occur, if any.

Lots of people have aneurysms clipped all the time and do just fine!

Good luck to you and your mom.

the rate if pretty low... it mainly depends on your doctor. If you are in a developed like me (i live in canada) you should not worry, he will be fine, tell you dad to say this before the sergury: "If i shall die before i wake, pray my lord my soul to take"
