These sites have been around for years, so I'd hardly call them a fad or a craze. I think they remain popular because people can meet others right from their homes, no need to dress, spend money, go out. Also, people can advertise all their good points, leave out the bad, and get potential daters to "get to know them" by writing back and forth before letting all the cats out of the bag.
As far as the sexism/racism twist, it's just safe to advertise those politcally incorrect slants on these sites. I don't see how a person can be called to answer for their personal preferences when they're setting them down in one of these sites.
If someone's shy on a personal level, these sites feel safe. You never actually have to meet someone face to face. Others just get a kick out of all the attention they get. One additional plus is that people get to meet others who aren't local; I know of two women who had online "relationships" with guys who lived 100's of miles away.

I have personally never visited one of these sites, happily married and whatnot, but this is why I imagine that they exist successfully.

it's a great way to meet lots of people at once and you don't have to go out and get dressed up. if the person have a pic, you can sort through a lot of profiles at once.

I met my husband through yahoo personals. It is really hard to find your match. Internet dating sites do offer more choices than I would have had through traditional methods.
