Macular Degeneration - AMD - ARMD

Macular degeneration, sometimes called just AMD or ARMD (age-related macular degeneration) is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness in American men and women above the age of 65. Since the Baby Boomers are getting older and older and their generation represent an increasingly larger percentage of the general population, vision loss is a growing problem.

In October of 2006, the National Eye Institute (NEI) announced that it would fund a comparative study trial of ranibizumab (Lucentis) and bevacizumab (Avastin) to assess the effectiveness of the medicines in treating AMD.

The following fruits and vegetables are natural remedies:. Cherries and prunes are known to slow the aging process. Thus prevents macular degeneration which is usually associated with old age. Sweet potatoes, grapes, cantaloupes, and carrots are good to save the eyesight. Apricots are good to BOTH slow the aging process and saves the eyesight..

Unfortunately, there is no cure. There are several eye drops that can help lessen the process or temporarily keep the damage at bay but, since Macular Degeneration affects the retina, there is really no way to stop its' progress. The retina is responsible for sending signals to the brain. The macula is in the part of the retina that distinguishes fine detail at the center of the field vision.Degeneration begins with partial breakdown of an insulating layer between the retinas and the choroid ( layer of blood vessels behind the retina).Fluid leakage occurs, and new blood vessels growing from the choroid destroy the retinal eye tissue and replace it with scar tissue. The effect is a roughly circular area of blindness, increasing in size until it becomes large enough to obliterate two or three words at a normal reading distance. With early diagnosis, it is sometimes possible to seal off the leakage with a laser. In most cases, however, the disorder is untreatable. I hope that this will explain the process . Your Dad will need to adapt and may require more assistance with certain activities.

Hi worried son, you need know, that Macular degeneration is a deterioration of the macula. The macula is at the center of the retina. The retina is the part of the eye that sends visual images to the brain so a person can see. This damage to the macula results in blind spots, blurry or distorted vision. Yes, this disease is one of the major visual disease in the United States and that it is closely linked with aging. It is thought that the dry form is caused by thinning of the tissue in the macula. The wet form may be caused by leakage of blood and fluid into the retina.
Sorry, but there is no cure for macular degeneration. Many medicines and treatments are still in the beginning stages of being studied. If you carry a high risk the best chance of dealing with the disease is getting regular eye exams. Yes your doctor can perform one of several outpatient procedures to slow or even stop the progress of the disease. Foods rich in antioxidants, such as leafy green vegetables and fruits, can help prevent or delay the development of macular degeneration. It’s also important to wear sunglasses that block UV rays, to stop smoking, to manage conditions such as high blood pressure and to get regular eye exams.

No, macular degeneration is a progressive disease that results in blindness. It is usually associated with Diabetes.

Depending on your father's overall health, the process may be slow, or he may rapidly lose his sight.

Some people report that wearing glasses, using good reading light, wearing sunglasses, and resting the eyes frequently with a cool wash cloth helps.

There have been some studies that suggest using statins (drugs which reduce cholesterol) can help slow and even reverse macular degeneration. Although they are not yet formally recommended, many opthalmologists are starting to use these drugs to treat the condition.
