Why is it that some people say they don't believe in God because they have no proof? Is there proof that he doesn't exist? And what exactly do you believe God to be? An old man with a grey beard sitting on the clouds? Why don't some people believe in anything the cannot see? Not everything is visible, and not everything can be held in your hand.
Do you see the love you feel for your kids? Do you see compassion? Do you see happiness and fulfillment? No you just feel it. And that 's enough proof that it exists. If God didn't exist why would we believe in Him? How the heck did we come up with that crazy idea that there's a God? To me God is all the beautiful feelings we have inside. Our intuition, our soul, the sun, the wind, our higher self...
Any oppinions? If it seems like I'm preaching, I'm not. I 'm just trying to see the logic behind atheism.

To the girl that wants me to take a science class: Why don't you try to explain how the human brain was created. That exixts for sure, but how? and why? As for the flying hippos, I shouldn't even comment on that, but since you mentioned it, hippos do exist. So does flying. How do you come up with something from your imagination that's nothing like you 've ever seen? How do you even imagine it unless somewhere inside you feel it's there? Now you may really feel there are flying hippos or little pink beings in your living room, but the whole universe since the beginning of time, doesn't share your beliefs.

I totally agree that God is not exactly the way he's portratyed in the bible. Believing for sure that God doesn't exist because we cannot see him, is as ignorant as believing that he's and old man sitting on the clouds, just because we were told that he is. Search inside you. He's a feeling, a force of good energy, that creates. We all belive in nature and evolution. Isn't that what God is?

I don't think anything's really proven in the purest sense of the word. The more I learn about science the more I believe that all of science is just modeling. The same is true of religion. We make models(or maps if you will) of the world in our heads. The models are good if they help us negotiate our way around the real world, if they closely simulate the world we live in, if they aid in our happiness. Scientific models are only concerned with accuracy. God models also include the happiness part. The models are not so good if they always seem to be predicting the wrong things, if they aid in our misery, if they cause us to make bad choices.
But all of these scientific laws and theories, and views of God are just models. They only approximate reality, and should not be confused with reality itself. Reality is just what we experience happening to us, and then filtered by our perception. Then we make models and introduce concepts to try to make sense of it, to try to predict what will happen next, to try to see purpose in it.
Their may not be such a thing as a true model. As humans with limited ability to imagine and conceptualize, we may never be able to know absolute truth, or make a perfect model of reality or God. Our conceptual abilities, given to us from birth as humans, are just too crude. So, I believe, to argue which view of God or Scientific model is the right one or the "true" model is folly. A better question is which one works the best.
I've heard that the suicide rate amongst atheists is higher than that of religious folk. So how well is sticking what science can measure working for them? Some peoples view of God seems pretty far off from reality, like the old man with a grey beard in the clouds view.
I think many of those who have this absolute FAITH in what science can prove: Have they ever actually seen the proof for these things? I mean, have they taken the evidence, examined that evidence to make sure it was solid, gone through the logical deductions, made sure there were no logical flaws in the deductions/inductions and logical arguments. I think very few of them have applied this rigorous process to those things they tout as being proven and unarguable. And if they did, they would see the uncertainty in it. To be fair, neither have most Bible beaters. And if they really examined where the Bible came from and how it came about there would again be uncertainty and doubt cast upon it. But this is where faith comes in. Faith is on both sides.
An uncertain world is an adults world, full of mystery and intrigue, and yes, some fear. A certain world is a childs world, locked to new information, full of safety and security, and, in my opinion, very boring.

There is physical proof of a God that exists or existed. That proof is us. Now look at it this way: We are here, alive and breathing. Some type of life source had to of created our life force. Whether God is a energy in space or some other being, he does exist. People like like to say it was the big bang that created everything. But how about this: What if the BIG bang was God? Light matter and dark matter colliding, can cause the creation of everything. But it goes beyond our comprehension. Life can not come from something that doesn't consist of life. If there was no life, then there would be no life. Our body is made up of energy and that is what God is made up of. That is how we are in his image. That could be how he is with everyone at all time. Once we die, our soul (energy) can not die. It must either go into another life (Reincarnation) or back to the main source. Energy must remain moving because dead objects do not contain energy.

well let's see, some people love democracy, does democracy exist? i mean, is it a physical thing? if there were no actually existing parliamentary democracies the idea of democracy could still exist in someone's mind. or take money perhaps. money and democracy are real because people agree that they are real, there is no other physical basis for them. is god like that? or is god more like communism, which some might say is a pure idea that has never actually been practiced because it's contrary to human nature?

just because a thing can be imagined is no guarantee that it's real. i'm sure you can imagine many things that have no known instantiation in reality. if your god is real by this argument presumbably all other gods that people have believed in are somehow "real". how does that work for you?

your idea of god seems so nebulous that it defies any sort of logical examination, let alone something as definitive as disproof. did you do that on purpose or was your idea of god developed by a kind of unconcious accretion of disparate parts?

I think the problem with atheism is that most people see God as something outside of themselves. A creature that exists somewhere out there who created the universe, and is responsible for everything wrong in it.
Truly there are no atheists, because God is inside us. And we all believe in ourselves. Who do you think you 're talking to when you say: "Oh I hope this happens for me..." If not God then who? You may say, my brain, my higher self, my subconscious, but all of that is the definition of God. God is a positive energy that 's inside us all. Part of our mind and soul, part of nature part of the universe, the universe itself. Every child that's born is a piece of God, and vice versa.
When we die, like someone above mentioned, our soul lives forever, and so does God. Maybe we just need to redifine the meaning of God. People seem to think He's some kind of ruler, or something. In the article that ray mentions, it says there cannot be God, because he would be perfect, and so would the universe he created. But if the universe isn't perfect, then there cannot be God. The universe is absolutely perfect. And so is nature and so is the human body. But the human spirit isn't perfect, because it's not supposed to be. We ''re supposed to keep learning in life, and achieve higher levels of spirituality. Otherwise what's the point of living? God gives us choice to be better, or worse.
Science may explain how things happen but not why they happened. So the concept of evolution, does not mean there is no God.
Anyone that believes in love, believes in God. Every human being wether they know it or not, believes in God. Everytime you feel hope, and love, wether you realize it or not you feel God inside. It has nothing to do with the bible, nothing to do with the Koran, or any religion for that matter. It has to do with the positive energy that 's all around.
People may rebel against religion, and I do too. But God is what allows me to go on. I don't look for God in any book, or any religion. I look for Him in my heart.

You are arguing with backwards logic. Those with an assertion are saddled with the responsibility of providing proof, NOT the other way around. (In other words, if I say flying hippos exist, it is MY responsibility to prove it - not YOURS to disprove. How can you disprove my flying hippo theory? Just because you're never seen it doesn't mean it doesn't exist right? Do you see the falseness in this logic?) Take a science class.

And I don't equate human goodness with God. I think humans should be good for the sake of being good, not because they're under threat of an imaginary Big Brother.

ah, if to you God is simply the beautiful feelings inside, then I agree indeed he does exist. But that's not what people mean by God in most cases, they mean some big dude in the sky who made the world. Douglas Adams had a pretty interesting talk about where the idea of a creator of the world comes from:

Another drive-by preaching. This is a Q and a forum, remember?

There is no proof that ANYTHING "doesn't exist". You have your logic backward. You are the one who claims that there is some kind of magical super-fairy. The burden of proof is on YOU. Human emotion or the desire to believe in a deity is not proof of one...only of the desire to wish there is one.

Humans have been making up gods since they were able to think. Your god is just one more in a long line of them.

You are preaching. Not answering a question or even asking one.

You're right there is no proof that god, in a genric sense does not exist ( thought it is about as likly as invisible pink unicorns) there is however a great deal of proof that, even if god did exist, he is not the self contradictory one presented in the bible. Interested in that proof? Read the bible. ( you know, for yourself, not just the parts your preacher tells you to read)

Have you ever heard the phrase, "seeing is believing"??
If you haven't, there it is..
anyways, that answers pretty much everything.
I don't believe in god simply because I'm Wiccan, and we belive not in one God, but a God and a Goddess.
It is all according to how you were raised,
and what you grew up around.

best of wishes.

It seems to me that you're just calling all the good within yourself and others 'god'.

Not just proof, there's no *evidence* whatsoever any gods exist.

Emotions are internal to the brain; do you claim god is part of your brain too? does he stop existing when that part of the brain is destroyed in an accident?

people believe in different gods because of tradition, pressure, the placebo effect... it doesn't mean any of them exist.
