Come on really, what religion has ever caused harm to you personally?

2007-07-27 21:09:12 · 30 answers · asked by Maximus_2007 3 in Society & Culture Religion & Spirituality

I read most of the replies to this and it's funny that most of your answers relate harm to people in the past caused by religion...when in fact it was mankind who has harmed mankind. The actions of men, in their pride and warped beliefs they harmed others...It was not religion that did this but men of this world. And as for alot of the answers that pertained to "we come on here and say this because you bigot christians do it to us" I asked the question because as I scrolled through the answers in the spirituality section I seen crude remarks by athiest all over the place....some of your guys answers have been misleading and condtradictory to say the least....one of you down there said athiest are spiritual to....well to that my friend I would go back and look up the definition of your stance buddy. And then another girl said because relgion wont let me have an abortion..to that I say practice self control KID and stop being selfish.

and then the same person writes that you guys lash out because homo's can't get married, well geez maybe because homosexuality is not biologically normal..it's against nature...our sex organs were made to reproduce and to recieve pleasure in the act of reproducing...not to sword fight with our dingy just to bust a nut and touch our vaginas together for orgasm...women can love women and men can love men..but self control and morality can make you not take that next step against the grain of nature and touch the same sex organs together only NOT TO REPRODUCE as our biological makeup has intended.

The problem is they have percieved injustices where someone has hurt them and they blame it on "religion." People are not the institution of whatever religion you belong to and people are still always going to be people no matter what so personality conflicts will happen.

the catholic faith has caused me some serios emitional damage as well as physical pain , in the form of spankings with a leather belt so badly that my thighs and lower back were covered with welts ( mom had really bad aim). then there was the boy who went to chruch at rosbank ( still not sure what denomonation that chruch is) who tryed to stone me after school because I wore a pentigram . not that long ago i had the back window of my car busted out, I can only assume ( I might be wrong ) that someone took offence to my bumper sticker it read " wiccian air born "we will not fly quitely into the night" and had a picture of a sterotypical witch flying on a broom stick on it. oh lets not forget, my family is military and the phelps;s actualy showed up to a funural that my family attended. it caused a lot of emitional distress. humm thers more but this isnt a D/s area so I wont go into detail except to say that the D/s lifestile is really not liked by christians

What Religion Has Done to Harm Me Personally:

1. The religious right won't let my gay friend Jesse get married
2. Or me have an abortion
3. give me trouble about my stem cell research
4. or teaching evolution to those close minded bigots you're raising
5. SEVERAL WARS BASED SOLELY ON RELIGION OVER THE LAST THOUSANDS OF YEARS, in case you forgot, in the name of something riddiculous, especially since

CHRISTIANITY

will be nothing but the way we see
GREEK MYTHOLOGY today tomarrow.
2 Timothy 4 They will reject the truth and chase myths.

Oh, but aren't you always?

since you added the gay comment....

the part of the brain that controls sexuality, the hypothalamus, looks like the opposite sex's in a gay person. There is a physiological reason for homosexuality that is certainly determined before birth, while the fetus is still growing.
Some psychologists believe the differently shaped/sized hypothalamus' in a gay male is caused by a pre natal deficiency in testosterone
GAYS ARE NOT BIOLOGICAL MISTAKES!
BIOLOGY CREATED THEM;
PICK UP A BIOBOOK, AND YES, THAT MEANS ONE WITHOUT A CREATIONISM.

Religion DOES cause personal harm to a lot of people. I could easily mention examples where I've been harassed because of a religion (not just the people involved--their religious beliefs told them to bother me).

Religion hurts us all when religious freaks attempt to inject their claptrap into public schools.

Religion hurts atheists specifically when we are marginalized. We don't have the same freedoms others have, and in most places we are forced to pretend we fit in or else risk being ostracized (or prevented from holding public office, et cetera).

So religion hurts atheists on a personal level, it hurts atheists as a group, and it hurts those who aren't even atheists. As a wise man recently said, religion poisons EVERYTHING.

Would you prefer this site to be used only by Christians, so that you can argue with each other about who can deposit the most slobber and drool on the feet of Jesus?
I really don't know how you can stand each other.
Listening to most Christians is like trying to swallow a cup full of sugar.-----"Oh please look at me. How wonderful I am.---How kind and gentle and loving, pure, obedient, reverent, trusting, self-sacrificing, altruistic, humble, etc., etc. I am"
When someone tries so hard to sell you something, don't you suspect the product might be defective?

I give up answering these questions about this topic.

I like watching Family Guy now although I can't wait until the new Futurama episodes come out on Comedy Central because Futurama is written much better, actually has a story line, and has a lot of nerd jokes in it.

You really have got to learn to use the "search" function. That exact question has been answered many times here.

Personally? Several times that I do not have the space or inclination to go into detail about.

I worry more over the actions of your religion's extremists...efforts to force superstition into science, to teach mythology as historical fact, the promotion of xenophobia and ignorance as virtues, the deliberate smearing of any religion not specifically your own...

Someone has to step up and confront the Creationists, the Dominionists, and the xenophobes.

I was told that if I was raped it was my fault. Because of my short hair and because I wear pants, they tell me I'm going to hell. Some men have tried to convince me to have children at 21 and spend the rest of my life in the kitchen. I have had people physically and emotionally attack me because I was of a different belief. I have lost family members and friends because I refused to take on their ideas of religion and salvation. It has caused me much grief, but I don't hate you because we don't share the same ideas.

I don't hate Christians, but I can say the same--as in "Why do a lot of Christians come on here and lash out at non-belief?"

well i was just told that this is a discussion forum. its up to you to ignore or take it to heart what they say. personally i take everyones words to heart as i find people very interesting. but the question is 'why do a lot of religious people come on here and lash out at atheists?' there is two sides of the coin, neither is wrong. i love God but i will never force anything on anyone that is not interested in hearing my beliefs. i will never say " your stupid for believing that because im 100% that my beliefs are correct" obviously no one can be 100% sure that their beliefs are correct, nothing in this world is consistant.

Slavery has never harmed me personally - so it's not bad either, right?

And religion has harmed MANY personally, from human sacrifice to the KKK. And yes, it has harmed me too.

This is a religon&spirituality board. Atheists have just as much right to be here as a Christian or Jew (etc).

religion has caused harm by restricting some of my personal rights through legislating laws based on religious concepts.
it caused me harm when a friend of mine was blown up by a suicide bomber.
it caused harm when i was circumcised because of religious beliefs without anyone asking if i wanted it done or not.
just to mention a few things off the cuff
